The Australian government has introduced significant changes to the Frequent Traveller Stream (FTS) under the Visitor (Subclass 600) visa, aimed at expanding accessibility and simplifying the application process. These changes, outlined in the Migration (Arrangements for Visitor (Class FA) visa applications) Amendment (LIN 24/084) Instrument 2024, mark a step toward greater inclusivity and flexibility for frequent travelers.

Here’s what you need to know:

Expanded Eligibility Criteria

Previously, eligibility for the Frequent Traveller Stream was limited to applicants holding a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and who were located in the PRC at the time of application.

As of 7 December 2024, this restriction has been removed. Now, applicants can submit their application:

From outside Australia

Or from a place specified in a legislative instrument (although no specific countries have been listed yet).

In addition, the Frequent Traveller Stream has been expanded to include passport holders from the following countries, provided their passport indicates nationality:

Brunei Darussalam

Cambodia

Indonesia

Lao People’s Democratic Republic

Malaysia

People’s Republic of China

The Philippines

Singapore

Thailand

Timor-Leste

Viet Nam

This change opens doors for nationals from these countries to enjoy the benefits of the Frequent Traveller Stream, fostering stronger regional connectivity and encouraging repeat travel to Australia.

What Does This Mean for Frequent Travelers?

The expansion of the Frequent Traveller Stream provides a more streamlined pathway for eligible passport holders who frequently visit Australia for leisure or business. It’s an excellent opportunity for travelers who value the convenience of a multiple-entry visa and simplified application requirements.

Eligible applicants can apply for the Visitor (Subclass 600) visa in the Frequent Traveller Stream online. The updated eligibility criteria ensure greater accessibility for those seeking a seamless visa experience.

In a major step forward for Australia's innovation ecosystem, STEM start-ups can now access accredited sponsorship to attract the skilled workers they need to drive growth and innovation.

What’s New?

From 7 December 2024, STEM start-ups that have secured venture capital funding from a registered Early Stage Venture Capital Limited Partnership (ESVCLP) will be eligible to apply for accredited sponsorship status.

Accredited sponsors benefit from priority processing of both nominations and visa applications under the following visa categories:

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 494) Visa

Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) Visa

This priority processing advantage will continue when the Skills in Demand visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024.

How Does Accreditation Work?

To become accredited, start-ups must first be approved as standard business sponsors. The government has also introduced stricter integrity measures for the accreditation process to ensure compliance with sponsorship obligations.

Updated Sponsorship Obligations

Starting 7 December 2024, there will be changes to sponsorship obligations, providing greater flexibility for both sponsors and visa holders.

Employers will no longer be required to ensure that sponsored employees only work in their nominated occupation after leaving their role.

Sponsored employees on temporary employer-sponsored visas will have up to 180 days at a time and 365 days total across their visa grant period to:

Find a new sponsor,

Apply for a different visa, or

Leave Australia.
