As you know we love sharing photos of travels - This week is of our recent trip to Gili Air. Gili Air is one of the three Gili Islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. It’s known for its beaches, clear turquoise waters, and laid-back atmosphere, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure.
Key Highlights of Gili Air:
Beaches and Snorkeling: Gili Air offers pristine white sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The island is surrounded by coral reefs, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. You can spot colorful fish, turtles, and other marine life close to the shore.
Diving: For diving enthusiasts, Gili Air has several dive shops that offer PADI courses and diving trips to explore the deeper parts of the surrounding reefs.
No Motorized Vehicles: Like the other Gili Islands, Gili Air has a ban on motorized vehicles. Transportation on the island is by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage (called "cidomo"), or on foot, contributing to the island’s tranquil environment.
Sunsets and Sunrises: Gili Air is known for its stunning sunsets, especially from the west coast of the island, where you can enjoy a drink at a beachside bar. The east coast offers beautiful sunrise views with the backdrop of Mount Rinjani on Lombok.

Local Culture: While Gili Air is more developed than Gili Meno but quieter than Gili Trawangan, it still retains a strong sense of local culture. You can explore the local village, interact with the friendly locals, and experience traditional Sasak culture.
Restaurants and Cafes: Many beachfront cafes and restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, from local Indonesian dishes to international options. Fresh seafood is a highlight, and many places offer BBQ options in the evenings. We had a meal of BBQ King Prawns one night - delicious!
Traditional Fishing: You can join local fishermen in their traditional boats for a more authentic fishing experience. These trips usually involve using hand lines or simple fishing gear, and you'll have the chance to catch various types of fish, including snapper, grouper, and mackerel. We caught 2 Grouper and 1 Coral Trout.
Decided to have an Aussie versus Indonesia competition. We won 2 to 1.
Nightlife: Gili Air has a relaxed nightlife scene with beach bars offering live music, bonfires, and a chill vibe, ideal for those looking to unwind after a day of activities.
The bars along the beachfront alternate party nights. Our accommodation was next to one of these bars, and was going to go to 3 am, fortunately, we sourced some ear plugs to block out the music haha!
