We had a fantastic ghost experience on Saturday night, in which several people saw a figure with a lantern moving in the grounds of Toowong Cemetery.
It was already a special occasion as the tour was being guided by Jack Sim, Ghost Tours Australia Director & author of "The Ghosts of Toowong Cemetery".
The group was led to a spooky old bridge that crosses a drain – once a creek - in the cemetery grounds. Jack told the tragic tale of a lady who was found deceased at the cemetery long ago. In time, the story became told that her ghost was seen standing very still on the bridge, walking along the creek line, and among the graves on either side. Known as the Black Widow, it is one of the most often seen ghosts of the graveyard.
It was near the bridge that around 5 or 6 people saw what they described as a small shape – like a person (one said a child) – carrying a light, which they thought was a lantern. The apparition appeared to be that of a woman in an old-fashioned black dress with an extraordinarily pale white complexion. It vanishes when a torch is directed towards it.

One of Queensland’s most shocking crimes was revealed 70 years ago today when a brain and blood spattered taxi-cab was found parked near Tuesley’s Jetty (now a bait-shop) on the waterfront at Southport on what was then called the South Coast, now the Gold Coast.
Journalist Ken Blanch was the first news reporter at the crime scene and later recalled it was clear that someone had been viciously attacked in the cab. The driver, Athol McCowan, 25, a post World War II veteran of the Occupation Force in Japan was missing. Police initiated one of the greatest searches in the state’s history. The finding of his body north of Brisbane a week later and the subsequent arrest and trial of notorious Boggo Road Jail escape-artist Slim Halliday made the crime one of the notorious ever.

This weekend marks the 150 year anniversary of Governor Blackall's death. Blackall led a diverse life including being appointed Governor of Queensland from 1868 - 1871.
His towering monument is the oldest in Toowong Cemetery, and was commissioned before there was even a cemetery. At that time, the area was used as a military training ground. Today, Toowong Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Queensland. Blackall's monument can be seen from all areas of the cemetery.
Once a year, on the anniversary of his death, from within the crypt comes a pale light and the sounds of shouts and laughter, where something very interesting can be seen inside.
