🚨 NEOM Project Update: THE LINE

Remember when NEOM first announced their ambitious plan to build a 170 km city running entirely on renewable energy, designed to house 9 million people?

Well, here’s the latest!

NEOM’s futuristic city, THE LINE, is still progressing, but with some key changes. Initially launched in 2021 as a massive linear city, the plan has since been scaled down. As of April 2024, THE LINE has been reduced to 2.4 km in length, targeting a population of 300,000 by 2030. These adjustments come due to shifts in the global economy and budgetary constraints.

However, the project is still moving forward at full speed! Campsites are set up, excavation is underway, and the first phase is scheduled to launch in 2024. Beyond THE LINE, other major NEOM projects like Oxagon, Trojena, and The Spine are also in active development.

With a $2.67 billion revolving credit facility secured, NEOM remains a central pillar of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Despite challenges, it’s still leading the way in innovation and sustainability for the future!

Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking project! 🌍🚀

Australia’s First Ever Automatic Train Launches in Sydney Costing $21.6BN 💸

Sydney just got a serious upgrade with the launch of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line. This isn't just another train line; it's a huge engineering achievement designed to handle Sydney's growing population with cutting-edge technology and unparalleled efficiency.

All the Big Numbers: An Australian First

- $21.6 BILLION: The scale of this investment is the largest in Australian history for a completed infrastructure project. The budget blew out by $10BN when it was originally set to cost $12BN when first proposed in 2017.
- 15.5km under water: The metro line stretches beneath Sydney, including a 3-minute journey under Sydney Harbour, creating a fast, uninterrupted link between the city’s northern and southern regions, and drastically cutting travel time.
- 6.1 MILLION tonnes of earth excavated: A colossal effort was required to excavate this amount of earth which is equivalent to filling a huge 2,440 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- 4,000 tonnes of steel: Used to reinforce the tunnels and stations, the amount of steel involved is equivalent to the weight of 10 Boeing 747 aircrafts, highlighting the massive scale of this project.
- 37,000 passengers per hour: During peak times, the metro can move more people across the Harbour than both the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel combined! This significantly reduces pressure on these existing transport routes.
- 445 daily services: With trains arriving every 4 minutes during peak hours, the metro offers a fast, reliable alternative to Sydney’s often congested roads.
- 7 new stations: Modern, high-capacity hubs like Crows Nest, Barangaroo, and Waterloo are designed to handle the demands of Sydney’s growing population, each equipped with cutting-edge facilities.
- 900 bike parking spaces: To encourage more sustainable commuting options, these stations include secure bike parking, making it easier for residents to combine cycling with their metro journeys and reduce their reliance on car travel.

The Sydney Metro isn’t just fast, it’s smart. With continuous mobile coverage, advanced surveillance systems, and driverless trains, the metro offers a seamless, connected journey every time. Each station is equipped with the latest digital technologies, ensuring that every aspect of the commute is smooth and efficient.

This is just the start. The Sydney Metro City & Southwest line is laying the groundwork for a transport network that can grow with the city.

The next step?

Upgrading the T3 Bankstown line to extend this network even further. 🤩

Melbourne's 74-storey tower 🏙️

BLVD, the next edition to Melbourne’s Southbank area will join 2 other residential towers, commercial, retail, and park space in the huge $3BN Melbourne Square precinct.

Contracted to construction giant Multiplex and developed by OSK property, BLVD is now underway with ground first broken in June this year!

Here's what this massive building will feature:

• 602 apartments (50% have already sold) - 1, 2, and 3 bedroom living offering different amenity levels.

• A coworking area on the 55th and 56th floors to make working from home that much more convenient.

• The whole building is focused on health and fitness with the level 8 “Podium Club” featuring a 25m indoor pool, sauna, and gym. Each apartment is carbon-neutral operation-enabled, gas-free, and offers EV charging stations.

• An entire entertainment space with a cinema, lounge area, and a golf simulator…

• BLVD is in pre-registration to achieve WELL certification – this certifies the building’s sustainability rating by assessing its impact on health, wellbeing, and building practices.

• The Melbourne Square Precinct itself is getting a huge upgrade with a 3,745 sqm park, fully stocked woollies, a childcare center, and multiple new retail spots.

This huge development should be finished in the first quarter of 2028 – two future developments are also planned in the area so it's uncertain when the rest of the precinct will be finished.

Why Queensland's Paradise Dam Needs to be Rebuilt 💧

A vital source of water for surrounding farmland and the Bundaberg region, after only 19 years of operation Paradise Dam has now been deemed completely unfixable.

Built in 2005 for $240M, the Dam was expected to last a century. After natural disasters revealed the Dam's faults and accelerated its deterioration, Paradise Dam is now recognised as one of Australia's biggest infrastructure failures.

Spanning 600m across the Burnett River with a max hold of 170,000 Mega Litres, and 60,000 people living downstream, a collapse of the Dam wall would be catastrophic.

Here's everything that has gone wrong:

• The devastating floods of 2011 and 2013 damaged the Dam wall, with $23M spent in December of 2013 to repair it. It was declared safe but later found an additional $10M worth of safety work was still required.

• The Dam was lowered by 5.8m in 2020 to address continuing safety concerns, but this reduced its capacity to just 40% of what it originally held. This enticed mass frustration amongst local farmers whose harvest capacity was lowered due to the reduced water availability.

• In 2023, work began to restore the wall to its original height with plans to reinforce it with additional concrete. The state and federal government committed $1.2B to this, but investigations into the structural integrity of the wall determined that all plans would need to be scrapped, deeming it "completely unfixable".

• This revealed that the concrete mix used to build the wall had significantly more clay than cement. This means the wall is prone to swelling and contracting when moisture is added or taken away - basically encouraging cracks to happen. The porous nature of the mix also caused cement to leach out and carbonation to occur, making it structurally weak.

• More issues were noticed in the bond layers of the roller compacted concrete, the foundations under the secondary spillway, and a heavy risk of erosion immediately downstream of the wall.

Since nothing can really be done to repair the original wall, an entirely new one will be built 70m downstream with the original later demolished.

No concrete project plans or budget have been revealed yet, but let's hope this time they use a lot more cement and a lot less clay! 🪨

The $7 BILLION Wilton Greens Urban Development 🌳

As Australia's population grows, our state and federal governments are understanding the need to provide affordable housing on a larger scale. One project born out of this is the redevelopment of Wilton in NSW, 80km south west of Sydney CBD.

Since 2018, plans have steadily rolled out for the urban renewal of the Wilton area, approved in 2021 with construction finally commencing in 2023. By 2040, the area is expected to be home to an additional 35,000 people.

Here's what else will be included in this massive development:

• $178.5 MILLON investment into new infrastructure and transport

• $632 MILLION investment to complete the nearby Campbelltown hospital redevelopment

• 620 Hectares of protected and conserved bushland with a designated "Koala Corridor".

• 200 Hectares for a new town center, commercial, and retail space. By 2031 the town center will be home to 1600 new homes with new community facilities like a school, library, medical center, and a park.

• By 2041, Wilton will be home to more than 15,000 homes, with 17 hectares of commercial space, 39 hectares of conserved land, and will provide 4700 new jobs.

Wilton Greens is set to speed up the delivery of new homes in low-density residential areas while ensuring the environment is considered at the same time.

Brisbane's $212 MILLION Apartment Building 🏙️

25-storeys tall, Isle by Mirvac is set to be the latest luxury edition to Brisbane’s growing skyline. Located in one of the city's most in-demand suburbs, Newstead is on the fringe of suburban and city living – making it the perfect place for first-home owners.

Overlooking the CBD, Brisbane River, and Eastern suburbs, Isle has spectacular views of the Sunshine State’s capital city, experiencing much needed breezes above a growing urban space.

Isle combines resort living with the necessities of an apartment, creating a luxury place that will be home to 133 apartments by the end of 2025. These apartments range in price from $540,000 - $6.25m, with 78% sold as of April 2023.

10,000 plants line its exterior and ground level to follow Brisbane’s commitment to creating “buildings that breathe” – implementing other environmentally conscious initiatives like solar panels, EV car charging, and water efficient systems.

The building redefines apartment living by including a rooftop infinity pool, yoga lawn, sunset cocktail bar, gym, magnesium spas and resort features, and communal office spaces.

Newstead is taking over, and Mirvac is leading the race!

Stockholm's $4BILLION E4 Bypass 🛣️

21km in length, the E4 will be one of the world's longest tunnel systems when it is completed in 2030 - but it will be the only one to travel across 14 islands.

Building a tunnel system through this kind of land is pretty tricky as the rock conditions regularly change. So, they've had to rely on the traditional tunnel boring method, drill and blast, to minimise vibrations and move carefully throughout the route. But obviously, this makes the process quite drawn out.

Here's what's going into this massive tunnel system:

• To seal the natural cracks of the rock and avoid ground water from entering, workers drilled a set of holes about 25m deep into the bedrock, they then pumped through a cement mixture to seal the holes and cracks.

• To allow for controlled blasting, workers drilled another set of holes in the tunnel area that are then filled and charged with a blasting agent. Where the route passes under Lake Malaren (60m below the surface), controlled core drilling is done as rock conditions are uncertain.

• Loose rock is then "scraped" from the ceiling and walls at first with a hydraulic hammer, then manually.

• 19 million tonnes of exploded rock will then be "unloaded" from the tunnels and used as raw material for construction of the bypass.

• The tunnels will then be reinforced with rock bolts (depending on the rock conditions), and sprayed with concrete. The walls and ceiling will then be clad.

• So far, tunneling the E4 is moving forward by 5-15m each week - a very drawn out process that was supposed to finish in 2018, but should now complete in 2030.

• Once finished, twin tunnels carrying 3 lanes of traffic each for 18km are met with 6 interchanges and 2 roundabouts along the route that connect to existing roads.

• Fixed firefighting systems are built into the tunnel, with a bridge built over the Malarbanan rail line.

This project is set to elevate tonnes of traffic congestion in Stockholm, setting a new standard for tunneling.

Once again, Europe takes engineering to a new level!

The $5 BILLION Melrose Park Urban Renewal Project 🏙️

Located 12km northwest of Sydney's CBD and originally used as an industrial space, Melrose Park is getting special treatment to redevelop the area into a residential hub. It'll be home to 5,500 new apartments, extensive retail space, parkland, and community spaces.

Here's what this project involves:

• The development will be split into 4 quadrants, defined by distinct colour and material differences. The quads will create a "walkable city" made up of 6 residential towers connected via parkland, bike routes, and community spaces.

• Melrose Central: 494 new apartments, 30,000 sqm of retail space, and a station on the Parramatta light rail line.

• Podium Park: This elevated park space above the streets for residents only was completed in March this year, and holds outdoor amenities and playgrounds.

• Sekisui House (Developer holding 85% of the land with Deicorp) has submitted a development application to build a further 836 apartments, starting in 2025. Of this, 368 apartments would be built in stage 5 with the following 468 built in stage 6.

• Stage 6 will include the construction of 2 residential towers, 20 and 24 storeys tall.

• Each of the 6 towers will hold mixed living options, offering 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom apartments.

• Majority of the project is already underway with completion expected in 2027. Concrete is poured daily with a new floor constructed every 3 weeks!

The urban renewal of Melrose Park will introduce a new high school to the area, tons of retail opportunities, and lessen the strain on Sydney's housing crisis - stage 3 sold out in 2023, with 60% of buyers being first-home buyers.

Check out this crazy reno, fair enough if you didn't believe this was the same house!

Renovated by Bianca and Jay Burnz, this Gold Coast home went through a massive transformation becoming the most viewed property on Realestate.com in 2023.

Bought for $1.1 million in 2020, the home in Benowa Waters was then sold for a huge $2.85 million in 2023.

Here's what the reno involved:

• A fully self-contained granny flat fit with 2 bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen and dining room, its own bathroom, and laundry. Awesome to rent out, or store the in-laws in 😋

• A separate guest suite on the ground floor.

• They filled in the pool in the front yard and built an entirely new pool in the back yard - with a fittingly massive alfresco space beside it.

• A 3.2m long island bench in the kitchen, with a huge butler's pantry to the side.

• They pretty much gutted the interior, even reducing the property's overall size. It's fit with 6 huge bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 2 car spaces, with half the upper level forming the master suite!

• Half the exterior brick was clad with weatherboard, with the other half rendered.

What do you think about this project?

Our Story

Techskill.io Academy, founded in 2014, is Australia’s leading educational provider of bespoke online and offline training solutions and industry-recognized programs. Since it's inception, Techskill.io has been delivering training and mentoring services to those in the Oil & Gas industry both domestically and internationally; most notably work carried out in Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, India and the Middle East. In addition to various training provisions and initiatives within the Oil & Gas sector, Techskill.io was also contracted to provide recruitment services for a number of onshore drilling operations. A bi-product of which was ensuring that newly recruited employees were adequately trained and proficient in their particular skill sets. Alas, Techskill.io Academy was born.

Initially, training was privately carried out on a contract-basis (2014 - 2016); these were highly specialized and bespoke training which had no categorized accreditation given its relatively niche market.

Working alongside these major Oil & Gas operators whilst providing crucial training to key business stakeholders ranging from Managers, Engineers, Superintendents and Drillers allowed Techskill.io to further expand its operational scope. This resulted in the development of an Oil & Gas well control training centre which delivered nationally accredited IADC and IWCF training across the Surat Basin in Toowoomba, Queensland.

In November 2016, Techskill.io Academy (then called TecSkill) was formally registered as an accredited training provider, approved by both an independent and federal regulator.
