DAY 8 - 4 NOVEMBER 2024

Day 8 of the trek - 4th November 2024
Gokyo to Gokyo Ri
* Total ascent-508m
* Elevation reached-5357m
* Distance-1.8km

We started trekking at 5am in the dark at -6 degrees with our headlamps on and merino wool thermals from the tip of our toes to the top of our head, along with many layers.

Our uphill trek took us about 2 hours 20 minutes to get to the top, a slow, cold yet breath taking ascent. It was more than worth it when we reached a point above the first clouds and there were still clouds above, but between the cloud layers were stunning views of the mountains around us.

We continued upwards and as we made the top, the sun came out and lit up the mountains and provided us with a little warmth as we took in 360 degree views of mountains, glaciers and lakes.
To say today was a tough day is an understatement. A very short distance but all very steep upwards to reach the Gokyo Ri and the impacts of altitude is no joke!

But we reached another milestone today as we achieved over 5000m today!!

We headed over to the world’s highest bakery for more coffee and cake and enjoyed the movie “7 years in Tibet” whilst it was snowing outside.

DAY 7 - 3 NOVEMBER 2024

Day 7 of the trek - 3rd November 2024
Machermo to Gokyo
* Total ascent-473m
* Finishing Elevation-4800m
* Distance-7.7km

We headed off on this fresh morning, again in the minus’ following the river until we got to Gokyo Lake 1 where we rested briefly and took in the stunning views.

We continued on our journey to Gokyo Lake 2 where we were greeted with an even bigger lake of turquoise colour. Here we climbed over a few rocks to pick up the first snow of the trip. You’ll have to zoom in on the photo with the red circle to see!

And then a few more kms up and down and round the corner and we get the most incredible views of Gokyo Lake 3. Wow… it’s so beautiful and the colour so vibrant against the mountains covered with snow

We will wake up to this view out our room window and also eat in the lodge with this view, how lucky are we to spend two nights here.

After lunch, we took a short uphill stroll to see a glacier that we will cross in a few days, apparently it’s 18km long! Nature is truly amazing.

We couldn’t finish our day without a visit to the world’s highest bakery, where we enjoyed coffee and blueberry cheesecake, whilst watching the movie “The Climb”.

We retired to the tea house for warmth, cards and dinner before turning in on another “best day ever”.

DAY 6 - 2 NOVEMBER 2024

Day 6 of the trek - 2nd November 2024
Dhole to Machermo
* Total ascent-482m
* Finishing Elevation-4470m
* Distance-5.5km

We started the morning at -5 but it warmed up to a comfortable trekking temperature for our shorter day today.

We saw Cho Oyu which is a peak over 8000m (6th highest in the world). It’s like everything here is giant, the mountains, rivers, trees, rocks etc. It’s hard to fathom how everest is double the height of where we stand today, given how far we’ve already come up.

We paid for hot showers and were able to rinse some clothes and dry them by the pot belly fire, making us feel fresh and ready for our next adventures at Gokyo.

We went for a little wander around the village after lunch and down by the stream, which was very chilly but beautiful. Nothing beats silence with the exception of the water rushing over the rocks.

DAY 5 - 1 NOVEMBER 2024

Day 5 of the trek - 1st November 2024
Khumjung to Dhole
* Total ascent-778m
* Finishing Elevation-4110m
* Distance-11km

Before we headed off we were gifted Kata scarves from Phurba’s wife wishing us a safe journey and good luck.

Today started with a lovely stroll as we left Khumjung lulling us into a false sense of security. We could see this nicely formed barely elevated path off in the distance with other people walking along.
Then things changed abruptly when told said we go up this way enter climbing mode, increased heart rate and all just at the thought of this “dodgy looking short cut”. But I tell you it was so worth it, the views were breathtaking and having our Phurba’s (guid) expertise and local knowledge is truly delivering us a personalised experience that is certainly not on the regular brochures.

We stopped off at Mong for a cuppa tea and to take in stunning views of Ama Dablam. With binoculars we were able to see 3 people actually climbing to the peak! What an incredible feat for those people.

We then made our way down to Phortse Thanga for lunch and views of the river. We know what going down means…. Time to go back up to our destination for the day Dhole.

We finished off our day with a delicious dinner and cards.
