2025 Vis Moot - call for EOIs

EOIs due 4pm Wednesday 27 November 2024.
Team selection is underway, with the first team meeting to be held later this week (22/23 November), but we remain interested in your EOIs. Please get your EOI in as soon as possible, and no later than 4pm Wednesday 27 November 2024. There will be no further extensions.
Applications are invited from interested LLB, PLT and PhD students in the School of Law to represent QUT at the 32nd Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The Oral Rounds of the 32nd Vis moot will be held in Vienna, Austria, 11-17 April 2025.
Students participating in this moot will learn about international commercial arbitration law, international commercial law and practice, and international sales law. The 2025 moot problem involves the arbitration of a dispute arising in a sustainable energy transaction. The Vis Moot Problem is available here.
Students selected for the team are eligible for academic credit in LLB460 Competition Moots A, or LLB461 Competition Moots B. The team will be coached by Dr Anne Matthew. For details of how to Express Your Interest (EOI), and other information, please see below.
Key Dates:
Tuesday 19 November 2024 by 4pm AEST: Closing date for EOIs.
Thursday 12 December, 2024, Vienna time - Claimant Submissions Due.
Thursday 30 January 2025, Vienna time - Respondent Submissions Due.
11-17 April 2025, Vienna time - Oral Rounds, Vienna, Austria.
Note: QUT mid-semester break commences Saturday 12 April. Semester resumes on Tuesday 22 April 2025.
The Team:
Composition: A team of three to eight students will form the QUT Vis team. They will all participate in researching and writing submissions. Three or four of these students will be selected as oralists to travel to the Oral Rounds of the competition in Vienna.
Eligibility: You must meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Vis Moot Rules. Eligibility is assessed as at 12 December 2024. In short, you are eligible if:
• You are a current LLB, PLT or PhD student in the QUT School of Law.
• You have never been admitted to practice law in any jurisdiction.
NB: Teams may include former Vis Moot participants where they meet Vis Rule 33.
Do you need to be an experienced mooter?
We are interested in receiving expressions of interest from all students interested. The team selected will be a mixture of highly skilled/experienced mooters and researchers who may or may not have prior mooting experience. NB: prior experience in mooting is not necessary if you are seeking to demonstrate your eligibility to meet the EOI Selection Criteria based on your research experience.
Availability for team research and writing meetings over Summer:
You must have considerable capacity to undertake the significant research, writing and oral practice tasks involved in this moot. The team will start working on the Moot Problem on Friday 22 November 2024. The team will meet regularly in the Law Library during the following periods:
22 November – 20 December 2024 Researching and Writing Submissions
3 January - 31 January 2025 Researching and Writing Respondent Submissions
Early February 2025 - 10 April 2025 Drafting Oral Submissions and Oral Practices
11 April - 17 April 2025 Oral Rounds of Competition, Vienna.
Team meetings will generally be held outside of business hours to accommodate students with Summer clerkship commitments. Oral Practices will frequently be held outside of business hours and on weekends to accommodate access to a range of guest practitioner arbitrators and intervarsity practice against other universities.
NB: From 21 December - 2 January 2025 there will be no team meetings and no research or writing expectations.
Selection of Oralists:
Oralists will be selected in February 2025. The team can have an unlimited number of researchers, but only a few students will be selected to travel to the Oral Rounds in Vienna. Only team members that have participated in researching and writing the submissions are eligible to stand for selection as Oralists. Oral tryouts will be conducted in February 2025.
QUT provides support for travel and accommodation for the Oral Rounds. QUT team members must be available for, and able to, travel as required; and must comply with all QUT, and Australian and Queensland government, requirements regarding international travel.
Submitting an EOI:
Email your EOI detailing how you meet each of the EOI Selection Criteria below by 4pm AEST Wednesday 27 November 2024 to [email protected] cc [email protected]. Your EOI should be a maximum of two (2) pages (minimum font is Times New Roman 12pt) that clearly identifies who you are (full name, student number and a contact telephone number); and that addresses all criteria below. In all other respects you may format the EOI as you wish; there is no specific form to use. You must email your EOI from your QUT email account.
NB: Submitting an EOI does not guarantee you a position on the team. The selection panel may call for further tryouts once expressions of interest are received.
EOI Selection Criteria:
You must demonstrate your eligibility as required by the Vis Moot Rules.
You must be available to travel to Europe to the Vis Moot competition from a date to be advised in April 2025 for the Oral Rounds (11-17 April 2025).
You must hold a valid adult passport that as of 17 April 2025 will have at least six (6) months before expiry and be able to make your own arrangements for any visas that you require.You must be able to demonstrate your suitability to represent QUT at this level of competition. This could be demonstrated via evidence of your: (a) capacity to research, novel and complex legal issues; or (b) a mooting, public speaking or competition track record. Provide details of prior research, mooting etc competitions that you have participated in, the year of competition, the size of the team, the topic/area of law of the moot, your experience and level of success in the competition and which school or university you were representing.
You must demonstrate completion of either Contract Law (LLB202) or Legal Research (LLH201).
You must demonstrate your capacity to work well in a small team and to provide, receive and respond to feedback from coaches, practice arbitrators and other team members.
You must demonstrate your capacity to devote:
(a) considerable amounts of time to the team’s research and written work from 22 November to the submission of Claimant and Respondent Submissions; and
(b) from early February 2025 to the Oral Rounds in April 2025 have very considerable time to devote to Oral Practices.
