Police guard residences in Hawthorne Street, Woolloongabba during the Bubonic Plague epidemic of 1900.
This is where the first case of Bubonic Plague occurred in Brisbane. The house on the left of the photo was occupied by James Drevesen, the first patient. Drevesen was a cart driver employed to remove goods from the wharves where dead and plague-infected rats were found.
The disease continued to appear in isolated cases in Brisbane until 1907.
Twenty-five deaths were recorded from fifty-six reported cases of the disease.

Get under the skin of Brisbane

Walk Brisbane offers small group walking tours, run by a fabulous team of experienced local Brisbane tour guides. Brisbane is a seriously cool city with great sights, accessible art + design, exceptional food and drinks, and fantastic weather – over 260 sunny days per year. We love it and want to share it with you!!

We have a variety of tours that are based on the best aspects of travel – a balance of stories about Brisbane’s past, present and future, interesting sights, some hidden secrets that only locals know, recommendations of the best and newest places to eat and drink, a few laughs, and a bit of exercise!

We know what it’s like to travel solo, as part of a couple or family group. We keep our tours small, up to a maximum of eight people, and introduce everyone so you feel really welcome.

Come and join us on one of our tours to really get under the skin of Brisbane!
