The best way to learn more about the food culture of a destination is a gourmet walking tour. Can recommend Robert Sung's "A Wok Around Granville Island".
With decades of food and hospitality background, Robert is a very knowledgeable and personable guide and this tour was a great way to sample some of the diverse food offerings in Vancouver, as well as learn some of the food history. Small groups of up to 8-10 guests make the tour more personalised.

A comfortable 2 hours wandering through the market with lots of different tastings including maple cured salmon, local cheese, charcuturie/cured meats, chocolates, donuts and lots more. Only operates Monday to Friday, avoiding the weekend crowds.

An extra stop was made at an Artisan Sake Maker at the end to finish a great tour.

With up to 170 days of rain per year, Vancouver has multiple sightseeing options depending on the weather, which can even change throughout the day.

In Stanley Park, enjoy a 60 minute narrated ride around the park onboard one of the horse-drawn carriages. The large Percheron horses slowly clip-clop along as you travel around the East Side of the park seeing the Totem Poles, the Girl in the Wetsuit statue, Lionsgate Bridge and large forest trees, some cut down due to pests or storm damage.

The Vancouver Aquarium has a very large display of sealife from the Tropics, Amazon and Pacific Canada. Amazing tanks of floating jellyfish and colourful frogs.
Outdoors is a seal display, otters and some rescued sea animals.

A full day pass on False Creek Ferries, allows unlimited rides to the Maritime Museum, Granville Island and along the waterfront areas of Yaletown and The Village for only CAD20 per person.

From the observation deck at Vancouver Lookout, there are 360 degree views over Vancouver, out to the mountains and close-by towns. Height of 553 ft/168 metres. There is a revolving restaurant on a higher floor for night views.

About 30 minutes by free coach from Canada Place is the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. From the native name Kai'palano (meaning beautiful river), the park covers 6000 acres of forest either side of the river. The first bridge was built in 1889 with h**p rope and cedar planks. The rope was replaced in 1903 with wire cable and the totally rebuilt in 1956 with steel cables. The suspension bridge is 450ft long and 230ft above the river. Boardwalks and a suspended cliff walk allow walking through the forest and along the river cliffs.

Day 31....disembark in Vancouver.
Along with NCL and Disney cruise ships, early morning arrival at Canada Place. As Immigration processes were done at Vancouver Island, it is a quick 15 minute walk from the ship, through the terminal and upstairs to the street.

Post cruise tour by Landsea Tours Ltd includes city highlights and dropoff at downtown hotels or Vancouver airport. Driver narrated tour includes stops at Stanley Park Totem Poles and Granville Island for lunch time at the popular food market. A great option for afternoon hotel check-ins or late flights departing in the afternoon or evening.

Granville Island was originally the site of old factories and warehouses that have been converted to smaller artists studios, dance studios and rowing club. The cement silos of the working factory were painted to add more colour to the area. Small boat companies go up and down the river. Views to the city area from the deck areas around the food market.

Day 30 at Victoria. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

A full day spent in Victoria, the last port visit of this cruise. The cruise terminal is about 10 minutes drive from the centre of town.

Shore Excursion to Butchart and Butterfly Gardens.
The Butchart Gardens are built on the site of an old family owned quarry and have been developed over 120 years. Any time of the year, the plants and gardens provide a wonderful walking experience through the sunken garden, Japanese garden, rose garden and Italian garden. 55 gardeners are employed to maintain the 50 acts of garden and over 900 plants. The property is still family owned.

About 1 mile away is the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, where butterflies and tropical birds fly free in the large tropical greenhouse. There is also a colourful flamingo, lots of turtles and a shy iguana.

Day 29 at sea. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

As the final day of our cruise draws closer, this last day at sea is spent washing and packing, catching up with new friends and reluctantly getting ready to go back into the real world without butlers, waiters and chefs.

Dinner at The Grill, the night time restaurant area on the pool deck where meals are cooked on super hot lava stones heated to 400 degrees. Bibs are provided and blankets when it is cold.

Day 28 in Ketchikan. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

Originally a fishing settlement for the Tongass and Cape Fox Tlingit Indians, who named a creek in the area Kitschk-hin, meaning “Thundering Wings of an Eagle.” In the 1880s a cannery was built, and the area became a supply centre for miners during the gold rush of the 1890s. Houses were built on high log stilts near Creek Street and were part of the red-light district of the city. Currently the creek water is fast and clear but in September/October it is full of salmon heading upstream to spawn.

Ketchikan is now a busy tourist destination for excursions from the many cruise ships that visit in the peak season from May to October.

Nearby is the community of Saxman, home to local Native Alaskan families and the Saxman Native Village Culture centre, where there is a presentation of ancient songs and dancers in traditional blankets and clothing inside the Bear Clan House.

Outside are a a number of totem poles. Some were carved to act as sign posts of clans and inhabitants of the village. Some are historical and others told traditional stories. Carved from western red cedar, totems can last for 50-70 years, then may be copied to continue the history.

Day 27 in Endicott Arm. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

A slow morning cruising up Endicott Arm, a 30 mile long narrow fjord with misty mountains, waterfalls and fir trees on each side. Pieces of ice floating past.
A good morning to have breakfast served to the room.

The end of the fjord is Dawes Glacier that is slowly calving chunks of blue ice.
Silver Muse does a full 360 degree turn at the glacier so all sides of the ship have a good view.

After a few hours spent in Endicott Arm, we sail back to more open water and head south towards Ketchikan.

Day 26 in Juneau. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906 and is the only US mainland state capital that is not accessible by road, only air or sea. The State Capital Building and Governor's Mansion are within walking distance of the town centre and cruise ship docks.

A busy day in port with 5 ships adding another approx 10,000 people to town.
HAL Nieuw Amsterdam, Sapphire Princess, Majestic Princess, Brilliance of the Seas and Silver Muse. Lots of different shore excursions offered to Mendenhall Glacier, Heli-flight and dog sledding, whale watching, sea kayaking and seaplane trips.

The best view is from the top of the Goldbelt Tramway on Mount Roberts.
Walking trails to see totems, the melting snow and views up and down the Gastineau Chanel.

Back down on the cable car to town and lots of shops - jewellery, furs, fudge, crafts. A long line for lunch at the well-known Crab Shack and crew members enjoying their Philippino BBQ.

Day 25 in Sitka. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

Native Alaskan, Russian and American history have combined to make the Sitka of today. The Kiksadi clan of the Tlingit called this area home for centuries before the arrival of the Russians in the 18th century for fur and timber. After the Territory became too difficult for Russia to manage long-distance, an agreement was reached to sell it to the United States in 1867 at a bargain price of US$7.2 million.
Today, its most important industries are fishing, government and tourism.

An information hour-long walking tour guided the small group up through the main street, past the Russian Orthodox church of St Michael's, past the new small boat harbour and highlighted the views across the bay from the local library and Castle Hill.

A visit is recommended to the Alaska Raptor Centre where injured birds are healed and returned to the wild when possible. There are some eagles that are permanently injured so cannot be released. Three bald eagles and a Golden eagle.

On the waterfront is the Sitka National Historic Park with a large number of totems.

Day 24 at Icy Strait Point. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

Originally a salmon cannery business near the small town of Hoonah.
Closed in 1999, the landing has been repurposed as America's only private cruise ship terminal. Alaskan owned and operated, the terminals employs about 85% of local residents and all of it's profits into the local environment.

Lots of activities for visiting cruise ship passengers including wildlife cruises, bear searches, kayaking, rafting and the world's largest ziprider. Nature trail or cable car between cruise ship docks.

Day 23 in Haines. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

The town of Haines sits at the head of the lengthy Lynn Canal - deep within the Inside Passage - about 45 mins by ferry to Skagway.

A small community of about 3,000 residents but the area is well known for the Alaska Chilkat Eagle Preserve which has the largest concentration of bald eagles in the world, particularly in winter when the salmon are running.

Historically known for Fort Seward. Originally established on 31 December 1898 during the Alaska Gold Rush period. Fort buildings for officers, hospital and garrison accomodation were built in 1903 and used until decommissioned in 1945. A group of 5 World War II veterans and their families bought the site in 1947 to live in.

Highlight was a shore excursion to Kroschel Wildlife Centre. Established by wildlife documentary maker, Steve Kroschel, and has continued over 40 years to house injured and orphaned Alaskan animals. Opportunity to touch and feed porcupine, moose, caribou. Has grey, arctic white and red foxes, wolves, mink, weasel, wolverine. An orphaned Kodiak bear cub is now a 14 year huge fluffy brown ball by the name of Kitty who loves blueberry pies.

Day 22 at Hubbard Glacier. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.

Morning spent under blue skies and puffy clouds with calm sea.
After lunch, the ship follows the Pilot boat into Yakutat Bay, surrounded by snow topped mountains and glacier fed water.

Slowly enter Disenchantment Bay to come close to Hubbard Glacier.
A tidal/mountain glacier over 122klm's long and approximately 5klm's wide.
This glacier has had some some notable advances in 1986 and 2002 which blocked a connecting river. Routinely, the face of the glacier calves off large icebergs and the remnants float past. It takes about 400 years for ice to traverse the length of the glacier.

A colony of fur seals can be spotted on one of the rocky areas in the Bay.

As we had good weather, the Captain was able to do a full 360 degree turn before we eventually left, making way for another cruise ship to enter the bay and enjoy their views.

Day 21 in Valdez. Silversea Silver Muse from Tokyo to Vancouver.
Surrounded by the 5,000ft Chugach Mountains and numerous glaciers, Valdez is Alaska's little Switzerland.
The original town was destroyed by a 9.2 Earthquake and Tsunami in 1964. Only the slab of the old Post Office remains. The new town area was built about 6.5klm's away with wide streets, close to the cruise and ferry terminal.

As the most northerly ice-free port in Alaska, Valdez was a starting point for the gold seekers in 1897 , and the terminal for the Trans- Alaska pipeline, constructed during the 1970's.

A short walk around town to visit the Maxine and Jesse Whitney Museum. Maxine and her husband arrived in Alaska in 1947 and opened a General Store. She was an avid collector and over decades acquired a wide range of Native Alaskan art, artefacts and taxidermy animals, including polar bears, wolves, brown bears, musk oxen and lots more. An amazing display, collected by just one person.

Afternoon shore excursion around the Valdez area, along the highway and through Keystone Canyon to Thompson Pass at 2638ft for views of snow covered mountains. A roadside stop to view the Worthington Glacier and touch the fresh crystallised snow. Final stop at the tall and noisy horse tail waterfalls.
