(3)

Flora 4 Fauna Eco Tours offer a wide range of affordable and educationally enlivening Interpretive Eco-tours throughout South-East Queensland. Our tours explore areas rich in local native flora and fauna, highlighting Australia's unique (plant-based) bush-foods, butterflies, bird life and traditional indigenous culture, as we journey throughout the landscape. All of our tours are flexible and dyna

mic in nature, mirroring the expectations of the participants and the climatic and seasonal variations of the environment. We endeavour to highlight the pros and cons of traditional and contemporary human habitation on this ancient continent and what can be done to protect and regenerate areas depleted by man-made impacts and climate change. Australia has an incredibly wide and diverse range of native flora and fauna that is spread across a vast and ancient geographic wonderland, that includes both wet and dry rain-forests, open woodlands, salt and freshwater wetlands, winding freshwater river systems, coastal plains, and the massive expanses of the arid interior. Whether you are an individual wanting to explore the native flora and the fauna of the greater Brisbane region, South-East Queensland or represent a group tour wanting to see our native species in their natural environment; Flora 4 Fauna Eco Tours can cater for your needs and deliver an enjoyably educational experience of this great Southern Land! Feel free to call us on Tel: (61+) 0437-238-719 or send an email to: [email protected] to discuss and book your next uniquely Australian Interpretive Eco-Adventure.

Did Australia's extinct giant kangaroos hop or stride? Fossils suggest they walked on two legs:

For millions of years, a whole bunch of other roo types roamed the continent and neighbouring lands before dying out.

They included giants, such as Procoptodon goliah, which disappeared around 40,000 years ago.

This huge stubby-faced species tipped the scales at 240 kilograms — that's two-and-a-half times the weight of the heftiest contemporary red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) — and stood 2 metres tall.

But were those burly beasts nimble hoppers, like their modern counterparts?

Thanks to ancient fossils and modern technology, scientists are piecing together a picture of how the now-extinct marsupials moved and lived.

And, perhaps, why they died! 🤔

A groundbreaking discovery: how we found remnants of Earth’s primordial crust near Perth, WA:

To come to grips with the time scale, imagine the history of our planet was a year long. Earth formed from swirling dust 12 months ago.

Any handful of sand you pick up around Perth will contain a grain or two from about ten months ago. Most of Australia’s gold formed seven months ago, and land plants arrived only one month ago.

Two weeks ago, dinosaurs showed up. All of humanity has come in the past 30 minutes. And you? Soberingly, on this scale, your life would last about half a second! 😳

Life depends on Earth’s ancient continental crust – but there are only a few places where remnants of it can still be seen today.

We dated a sacred Aboriginal women’s site used for birthing ceremonies and discovered 7,000 years of tool making:

By dating these artefacts, we have traced a 7,000-year history of continuous stone tool production by Aboriginal women – including objects traditionally associated with men. We are also the first team to ever date a sacred Aboriginal women’s area!

Read more:

Our research at the site – which was traditionally restricted to women – has also uncovered tools previously only associated with male crafters.

New species of flying pterosaur reptile discovered in outback Queensland fossil dig:

Soaring above the dinosaurs, flying reptiles described as "demonic pelicans" once navigated their way above a vast inland sea covering central Australia.

The 100-million-year-old fossilised remains of one such creature have been identified as a new species of pterosaur, powerful flying predators with wingspans of up to 12 metres!

Baobab trees all come from Madagascar – new study reveals that their seeds and seedlings floated to mainland Africa and all the way to Australia:

There are eight species of baobab in the world, and they have a surprising distribution. Six are found in Madagascar, an island in the Indian Ocean; one is found on the continent of Africa; and the last is far away in Australia.

Baobabs are a remarkable keystone species capable of supporting a wide diversity of animals for food and shelter. They can reach huge dimensions (depending on the species) in both height and diameter. The largest species can tower above the understorey vegetation!

New research has found that the world’s baobab trees all evolved on Madagascar 21 million years ago. Sometime in the last 12 million years, they floated on piles of debris to Australia and Africa.

Early Australian Indigenous people were organised, complex and sophisticated:

Historian Lynette Russell recounts amusingly the image taught to her as a young student of a pregnant woman floating on a log 65,000 years ago which led to humans settling in northern Australia and spreading over the entire continent.

In contrast, modern methods suggest an organised movement of people would have been necessary with hundreds, even thousands of people needed to settle and establish a community in the new land!

Lynette Russell and Ian J McNiven have written about innovation of first nations people in Australia in book seven of the First Knowledges series of books.

Recent fossil discoveries in central Queensland help scientists study climate change, species survival:

While it is impossible to travel back in time, 300,000-year-old fossils paint a prehistoric picture of giant koalas, thylacines, tree kangaroos, and even marsupial lions that lived cohesively.

"Looking back into this fossil record gives us an interesting glimpse of a weird and wonderful world that's extinct," Dr Hocknull said.

"One in particular, I find probably the cutest of all, is a gigantic ringtail possum that gets to about the size of a bulldog"!

The fossils of prehistoric megafauna, which have been perfectly preserved for hundreds of thousands of years, give scientists an insight into how climate change affects species.
