Blue Bay Whale Watching Mugging
Inevitably some whale watching trips are going to be better than others ... after all, wildlife is not something we can control.
We never know what the humpback whales might do and how they will behave on any given day ... and we definitely don't know what they are thinking???? ... but we would love to know!!!
What were they thinking today when they continuously circled the boat for more than 1hr and a half??
We had no choice but to shut down the engines on the Bay Warrior and sit through a breathtaking 'mugging' by 3 extremely curious humpies.
What does it mean when whales are mugging?
Imagine a whale sidling up to your boat, rolling over and looking you straight in the eye, or being so close that you feel as though you could virtually reach out and touch them - this is known as a 'mugging' - a general term used to describe a friendly or inquisitive whale that approaches a vessel and swims around it.
We even managed to slip in a GoPro underwater and capture some of their behaviour below the surface ... infact, listen closely and you might hear the whales communicating.
Give us a call on 1800858155, if you'd like to come out and make the most of the opportunities to see similar whale behaviour while there are so many whales out and about! You might even get 'mugged' just like our guests did today.
Our eastcoast humpies have finished their northern migration, but not all the whales are fixed on heading south .... or atleast not in a hurry to do so. Many of the whales we are seeing at the moment are quite casual and taking on some R&R, soaking up the sunshine on a very smooth ocean.
Our Blue Bay whale watching guests were treated to a number of remarkable interactions with some very curious humpbacks.
Beautiful footage from yesterday morning by our customer Benjamin from Freiburg in Germany. This is a typical encounter for August and the early Southern migration. Our favourite time of year. Thanks for sharing, Benjamin!
Some "tail action" from yesterday morning's trip by our guest Poppy. Thanks for sharing, Poppy!
And the award for best photo bomb goes toβ¦ you MUST watch this one to the end! Taken on our 11am whale watch today ππ³
Thanks for the great video, Malin!
More impressions from the long weekend.
It's so good to finally see our friendly Humpbacks again!
Thanks for the beautiful video @lou_rickard
Unfortunately northerly winds are keeping us off the ocean today. During our encounter with many humpback mums and calves of yesterday, we did have a moment where a confident calf swam across to the boat so we took the opportunity to put a GoPro camera into the water to capture an image of the calf passing by. To our surprise we got a little bit more than an image .... we also got whale song from a nearby humpback male escort. π³π₯°
