🎉Congratulations to Bundaberg's C&K Walkervale Community Kindergarten which has been named a finalist in the 2024 HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards for its dedication to improving outcomes for First Nations children and families. 👪
The awards have been running since 2010, and recognise the front-line educators and carers at the very heart of Australia's early childhood education system. Winners will be announced on September 19. 👏

Last weekend it was great to see an awesome turnout for the Canterberry Bulldogs and Dolphins match at Salters Oval. Before they took to the field a tradition of Welcome to Country was performed opening a safe passage for the visiting teams. This custom has been practiced by Aboriginal tribespeople and Taribelang Bunda for hundreds of generations.

Recently our team were invited to open the celebrations at Monduran Dam for the Fred Haigh Dam 5oth Anniversary. We were honoured to be a part of the celebrations which was held a culturally important area of the Taribelang Bunda that was originally named using Taribelang Bunda Language, Monduran.

Sunwater hosted a guest list ranging from former employees who planned and constructed the dam between 1970 - 1974, current Sunwater employees, and Irrigation and Water Industry representatives. Thank you Sunwater for a fantastic event, it was great to see many of the guests take part throughout the smoking ceremony at the start of this celebration.

As part of Milbi Festival 2024, we were invited to do a Welcome and smoking Ceremony as a pre-opening for the October event. Taribelang Bunda Elder, Uncle Darryl delivered a heartfelt welcome, he also spoke about the significance of both the Milbi and Meebar, the freshwater and saltwater turtles and the importance of both to the Bunda peoples.

The beautiful scenic background and the sounds of iconic Australian songs entertained the crowd with Fraser Coast Elder, Singer/songwriter setting the tone, topping off the beautiful morning.

This is too deadly! Congratulations to the team at Walkervale C&K on being awarded the Reconciliation in Action Award for 2024. A very well-deserved award for the beautiful Educators at Walkervale C&K, who have led the way and promoted reconciliation within the Kindergarten community. Through an understanding of trust and truth, Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours have enjoyed partnering up with Miss Kellie, Miss Nita and Miss Lucy and have loved creating a safe space for this journey of Cultural Immersion.

We've been busy in our local schools on our community visits. The children love learning the local language, stories, culture and history of the Traditional Custodians of Bundaberg, the Taribelang Bunda. We really do enjoy our visits and love seeing the younger generation immersing in Taribelang Bunda culture.

Last week we joined alongside Food Futures to deliver the Native foods and Culture Program. With year 10 and 11 girls we introduced them to native flavours as they blended together a Native Dukka which they enjoyed with a freshly made damper. Aunty Di and Aunty Alice gave their tick of approval on the girl's damper skills.

On the second day the young ladies were guided to cater for a group of Elders, teachers and members of the community using some of the native flavours they learnt about. They used their knowledge learnt the day prior to alter the menu to include using more native flavours. They worked amazingly in teams to deliver delicious food on time, to the guests.

With Naidoc celebrations still underway, our Team had the pleasure of joining Bundaberg Special School for their celebrations. Opening with a smoking ceremony of native medicinal plants, immersing the students, staff and guests in Aboriginal culture. Art, dance workshops and many activities were held throughout the day and it was great to see many community members in attendance, our Team enjoyed these Naidoc Celebrations at Bundaberg Special School.

This week the staff and students immersed in Taribelang Bunda history and culture. Uncle Wayne and Bec opened the community event by a Welcome, Smoking Ceremony and some words of guidance and encouragement for our next generations, followed by an indigenous inspired morning tea catered by Taribelang Aboriginal Corporation.

All year 7 classes this week had Waszie join, teaching them significant and important stories about the Taribelang Bunda and the Bundaberg region. Want to learn more about Taribelang Bunda or our school visits?

We had a blast at the IWC Naidoc Block Party at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct during the week. Our staff enjoyed connecting with community and showcasing a range of products on sale at Taribelang Bunda Designs.

Our team at our Tour shop have been working hard again for a local netball club, Alloway Netball Club. They came to us a couple of years to go to design an art piece to tell the story of their club. We then produced custom scrunchies for the junior netballers and netball bibs for the competition players to wear for Bundaberg Netball Association’s Indigenous Round. This year we are proud to create the indigenous round reversible visors for the junior players in the Alloway Club. Both boys and girls who love to play netball will be able to celebrate the Indigenous Round and our intertwined story and history.

Recently, we were invited to the Post World Exhibition Opening at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, featuring many artists collaborating with each other to create a parallel universe in their art pieces.

It was lovely meeting Artist Gail Mabo, taking the star sand of Mer (Murray Island) that her father (Uncle Eddie Koiki Mabo) shared with her as a child, enlarging and casting it in bronze with a rich tortoise shell patina, Mabo deifies it as a Cultural material of the land and sea beyond our lifetimes. A very beautiful story.

Recently we were invited to Bundaberg North High School for the opening of the Bush Tucker Garden and Yarning circle during the celebration of their 50th Anniversary. Traditional local native medicinal plants were used to smoke, cleanse and purify the area as everyone entered. This is a beautiful space that all students and teachers can enjoy the benefits of this area.

Sorry Day is observed each year on May 26th. It serves as a day to remember the injustices faced by First Nations people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, now known as the Stolen Generations. On this day, we honor their remarkable resilience. Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the "Bringing Them Home" report, which was presented to Parliament in 1997. This report included 54 recommendations aimed at supporting the healing of the Stolen Generations, their families, and the broader public.

We are here for them, to love them, to accept them, to honour them and help tell their stories.

We had a HUGE week in Melbourne/Narrm for the 44th edition of the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), promoting our Cultural Tours to international buyers who have travelled from 37 countries. With a booked-out schedule, and only a few minutes between appointments we were also able to fit in extra walk-ins, as more wanted to hear and learn about our Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours.

Melbourne hosted a spectacular ATE, connecting us with some influential people and businesses in the Tourism industry. CEO of Tourism and Events Queensland, Patricia O'Callaghan is one of many that made connections, and we were so proud to represent our Elder's and Families sharing our tours to all.

During the week Our Taribelang Bunda Elders were invited to present a Welcome and
Smoking Ceremony at the new site of the new Bundaberg Hospital. The new site where patients from Bundaberg and Wide Bay communities can access healthcare will be built on a very Significant site of the local Tribespeople of Bundaberg, the Taribelang Bunda.
We are honoured that acknowledgement and respect was shown throughout and cannot wait to see the great impact it will have on the Bundaberg Community and Wide Bay Regions.

This will be the largest health infrastructure the Region has ever seen, transforming healthcare for patients, carers and employment. History was made on this landmark event with the turning of the sod, signalling early stages of construction is to commence on the new Bundaberg Hospital site.
