Staying in burra to do the self guided Burra tour, this accommodation was available and fitting of getting into the spirit of the tour.
We enjoyed our stay here in the middle of winter, the combustion heater and reverse cycle air conditioner kept the lounge and Mbr toasty warm, whilst slightly increasing the temperature of the rest of the house, some fire wood was supplied.
All up we enjoyed our stay here and would stay again if returning to burra. Communication from the host was great, making check in easy.
If you are after accommodation that has some nostalgia, history, with antique decorations with a touch of early period correctness with some modern touches the this is a great stay. Really pleased we chose this accommodation to stay in whilst in Burra and would stay here again.
All up a pleasant stay, great accommodation, neat n tidy, quiet, great town with amazing cafes, “must try st just cafe amazing” also cook-o-burra however this is for sale so may change.
Thanks hosts.

We had a wonderful stay at Ayers Cottage!
The garden and surroundings are beautiful, and the house itself is so awesome! It is tastefully decorated and filled with so many interesting old historic artifacts all throughout the cottage (not to mention the building itself has an interesting history), and it almost felt like getting to live in a museum for a couple nights! That is, an extremely comfortable and cozy museum. We enjoyed getting to look around at all the different displays and look through/read some of the old books; and getting to play the old pump organ was a real highlight and so fun! It was a real treat to get to be so immersed in such history, and as such we were happy to treat everything with care and respect. Also very nice and plentiful amenities, comfortable beds/quiet bedrooms, and a great location. All in all, this is a wonderful cottage and we had a wonderful stay. I would definitely love to stay here again sometime, and I would highly recommend it!

BURRA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Off to the stunning South Australia countryside today, heading back in time to the enchanting historic town of Burra!

The original photograph of this edited and colourised picture is called "Horse-drawn Cab, Burra" (B 27697). The image is from the State Library of South Australia, Burra Collection. The unedited black and white picture can be found in the comments or the link below.

The library summarises the following: "Horse-drawn Cab owned by T. Hall, outside the Burra Hotel."

So, let's start with the intriguing question of who owns this charming old cab, shall we? According to an article in the 'Burra Record' dated 1 February 1911, the proud owner of the local cab was Mr Thomas Hall. It seems that Thomas was quite a character, and several articles about him on Trove exist. One story that caught my attention is from 'The Register' on 9 July 1912. It appears that Thomas Hall, the cab owner, was involved in a court case where he was accused of using abusive language at the Burra Railway Station. The story goes, "The evidence was ... Halls and the Mayor were on the platform of the Station to meet a party of blind performers who attended to give a concert. Halls claimed them as his passengers for his cab. The Mayor did likewise and claimed the visitors as his guests ... during the trouble, Hall used abusive words." Oh dear, quite the reception!

If you're planning to visit Burra to immerse yourself in its rich history, take advantage of a visit to the charming Burra Hotel! It's worth a stop on your itinerary.
