Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants from South East Asia which have specialised leaves known as pitfall traps - a prey-trapping mechanism featuring a deep cavity filled with digestive liquid. The rim of the pitcher (peristome) is slippery when moistened by condensation or nectar, causing attracted insects to fall into the trap!

Known as the Fishbone Prayer plant, this evergreen is easy to spot due to its alternating pattern of 'fishbone' stripes on its oval pale green leaves. The underside of the foliage is a burgundy-purple colour, an attractive feature that can be seen when the leaves fold up ‘in prayer’ at night.

One of the large, majestic Rain trees that welcomes you as you drive along the meandering road, through the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, into Edge Hill village.

Rain trees are large evergreen, umbrella-shaped, symmetrical trees that grow to 60m tall with a crown up to 80m broad, with coarse, flaky bark on their huge trunks. Their canopy's are so huge they have their own eco system, containing many other plants and provide lots of welcome shade in the tropics. They can been seen growing throughout Edge Hill, and are well over 100 years old.

The Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory inside the Cairns Botanic Gardens, features a host of tropical plants, including aroids, bromeliads, tillandsias, carnivorous plants, cycads, ferns, palms, orchids and, shown here, tassel ferns.

Not only are they rare, they are extraordinarily beautiful, and according to fossil records, Tassel ferns date back millions of years!

Sexy Pink heliconias (Heliconia chartacea) are always a showstopper when they flower in the garden at Bombora Lodge. A tropical native of South America, they are a favourite in FNQ, growing to 3m in height with pink flowers hanging down on long stems, with the small green true flowers half-hidden inside. The bright pink color of the flower bracts is rare among heliconias, making it pretty easy to identify.
