This Great Bowerbird doesn't look like it's eyes are closed on a quick look, but they are! Birds have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane which closes sideways. They can use this to keep their eyes protected without shutting out the light entirely!
Great Bowerbirds are common on the Cape York Peninsula and are one of the many feathered friends we encounter along the way during our 15 Day 4WD Cape York Adventure.
