Rangers Fun Fact Friday 🤠

At Red Peak / Guriguri Bunda: the Red Pittosporum, (Pittosporum rubiginosum) is fruiting, a small to medium-sized tree native to the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. After flowering the tree produces small, round, orange to red berries, which mature through autumn. These berries are an important food source for birds, cassowaries, white tailed rats and the very elusive musky rat kangaroos. 😊🌿

👀Check out this little guy—perfectly camouflaged just like a leaf! 🌿
Meet the Spiny Leaf Insect (Extatosoma tiaratum), native to Australia’s rainforests. With thorn-like spikes covering its body, this insect is a master of disguise, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. Its colours range from green to brown, depending on the environment. Females can grow up to 20cm, while males stay around 11cm. While the females can’t fly, they do have small wings, but the males can take flight when disturbed or in search of a mate. We are so lucky to have spotted this one amongst the tree branches so we can share with you! 😀🌿

🤠 On Sunday 2nd March our Environmental Rangers were excited to join the community for Clean up Australia Day! The team kicked off the day early at Glenoma Park in Cairns, under a stunningly bright blue sky. We want to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and helped us make a difference! Together, we collected numerous bags of rubbish from the beautiful green space. 💚 Let's keep working towards a cleaner, greener future! 🌍

We buzzed into Nature Book Week at Cairns Libraries Smithfield on Tuesday 15th October with a bee-tastic adventure! 🐝💛 Rangers Hayley and Jesse joined families to celebrate our native bees through the First Five Forever Program. After a successful stall at Cairns Ecofiesta, where visitors built bee hotels, we had a blast sharing the magic of bees once again. Our rainforest Rangers read Hotel for Bees by Alison McLennan to an eager audience, teaching kids why Native Bees are important for the environment. The excitement continued as children decorated their own Native bee hotels to take home for their backyards! 🏡✨
