Magical Mossman Gorge (Manjal Dimbi) - Place yourself here.
Just sitting, immersing yourself in the sounds of the Daintree Rainforest. The soothing flowing emerald water, a gentle breeze high in the canopy...a Ulysses butterfly dances through the trees.... just yourself and nature. Leave the rest of the world behind.

Wildlife Wednesday - What kind of bird is this? Where is it's wings?
This cutie is a flightless bird, a Southern Cassowary chick, found in the Wet Tropics of Tropical North Queensland. The father Cassowary is often seen wandering through the Daintree Rainforest foraging for fruits with his striped children in tow. Fun Fact - The Cassowary is related to emus and ostriches but did you know, they are also have cousins over in New Zealand, the Kiwi.

Wildlife Wednesday - Did you know Kangaroos can climb?!?
This marsupial is the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo found in the northern rainforests of Australia on the Atherton Tablelands. This Kangaroo is part of the Macropod family, the word roughly translating to "Big Footed". Unlike their ground dweller cousins, these Kangaroos have sharp long claws on their feet to help them climb.

A Stunning sunrise over Cape Tribulation (Kulki to the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people).
The headland was named "Cape Tribulation" by Lieutenant James Cook. He mentioned Cape Tribulation in his log book in 1770 as in nearby waters his ship The Endeavour ran aground on coral reef causing significant damage and delays. He wrote about Cape Tribulation and of their predicament "Because here began all my troubles..." (the trials and tribulations of the event).

Wildlife Wednesday - Did you know dragons are real!?!

This is the Boyd's Forest Dragon and they call the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest their home. They usually spend their time perched on tree trunks in the forest, around head height and are active between dawn and dusk. If you have a keen eye wandering through the rainforest, you may just spot one. This awesome close up photo is rare as they usually are quite shy. Congrats and Photo credit to driver guide Peter Munro for the cracking shot!

Have you spotted the Cassowary staring back at you on one of our luxury coaches in Cairns?
Cassowaries are the 3rd largest flightless bird (only behind the Ostrich & Emu) native to the Tropical North Rainforests of Australia and New Guinea.
Did you know, the bony lump on top of the Cassowaries head is called a casque which grows over time. It may look to be a solid mass however it is not, it is hollow inside and full of fibers. Several functions of the casque have been proposed from the use of navigating their way through the foulage of the rainforest, to regulating their body heat and to amplifying their very low call for communication purposes.

This has to be one of the most photographed spots in Tropical North Queensland. Have you been here?
This location was snapped by one of our drivers earlier in the year. You may know the famous beach below but do you know the name of the hill? Clue: It's named after something that used to be found there.

Who loves ice cream 🙋‍♀️🙋🙋‍♂️
The Daintree Ice Cream Company makes superb ice cream in the heart of the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest. It has to be up there with one of the most scenic locations to consume such a treat.
Their ice cream is made in complete harmony with nature from local ingredients and fruits from their orchard. In a sample of their signature cup (offered on our Cape Tribulation Daintree Day Tour), depending on what's in season you will have the opportunity to indulge in lesser known tropical fruits such as Mamey Sapote, Malay Apple, Soursop, Rollina, Marang & Abiu. Delicious!

What is this I see?! A prehistoric footprint in the mud!!
The Cassowary is the closest living relative to the dinosaur and it is the second heaviest bird in the world (behind the Ostrich)... no wonder their footprints make such an impression! The cassowary has 3 toed feet with sharp claws (which they have been known to kick humans and animals with) so you do not want to get into an altercation with them. Never approach a cassowary and never feed one.
Did you know: Cassowaries are good swimmers and can cross wide rivers and enjoy a dip in the sea....even with feet like these.
Photo credit📸Thanks to driver Scott from Down Under Tours. Just look how this large Cassowary footprint is larger than his hand!

Photo Descriptions: A 3 toed footprint of a cassowary is clear in the earth. In the final photo the driver Guide his placed his hand along side the large center toe of the Cassowary.

Sharing an incredible training day on Eastern Kuku Yalanji country this Earth Day 🌎

The Down Under Tours team had the privilege of learning from Marine and the Rainforest Rescue nursery team recently. It’s inspiring to witness the remarkable work being done there – from seed collection to trees in the ground ensuring right tree, right place, right time... is truly remarkable and achieves such a high success rate.

With 172 species under their care, the Rainforest Rescue nursery will produce 100,000 trees this year alone for their rescue and restoration projects. One such project is Lot 17 Cape Tribulation Road, made possible through the generous support of The TreadRight Foundation.

We also had the opportunity to explore Kuranji Bubu (Cassowary country), where we appreciated the transformation over the past 14 years. What was once a rubbish dump and the site of the oil palm plantations during the Christopher Skase era of Port Douglas is now a thriving ecosystem. The restoration efforts here are truly incredible and right next door to our lunch venue for our Daintree & Cape Tribulation Day tour.

Don't forget to look up!
Mossman Gorge is part of the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest. It has easy boardwalks so everyone can enjoy the majestic beauty of the Rainforest. Make sure that when you visit you look not only around you and down to the rainforest floor... but up into the canopy as well. Marvel at the fight for survival as the vegetation reaches high above you seeking the sunlight.
Around 3,000 plant species from over 210 families are found within the Daintree Rainforest and extended wet tropics region. Twelve out of the world’s 19 families of primitive flowering plants grow within the region and within these at least 50 species are found only within the tropics and rarely seen anywhere else. The diverse range of plant life also forms a natural archive of Australia’s evolutionary process.

🌱This April in the Daintree🌞
On a simply stunning sunny April afternoon we took a moment to indulge in the sights and sounds of the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest from Alexandra Lookout. We cast our eyes across the rainforest to the costal lowlands and the mouth of the mighty Daintree River. Beyond lies Snapper Island, Low Isles and the Coral Sea with the vision all neatly framed by the Tree Ferns...the place where the rainforest meets the sea, where 2 Heritage Listed areas sit side by side.

Our Australian built fleet are all fitted out with leather seats & timber floors. Our experienced Groups Department can assist with all transport requirements from itinerary planning, airport and dinner transfers, special interest groups, series groups, extended touring and Conferences & Incentives. Where we came from … We have come a long way from our humble beginnings in 1990 when brothers Gordon & James Dixon, along with their partners Helen & Jann, founded the company. Being raised in a family business in transport and logistics, it was a natural progression for the two brothers to establish their own company. In 1990 we started out with 6 vehicles and a handful of staff. This has steadily grown over time to now having the most modern, luxury fleet of 39 vehicles and employing 58 local staff, comprising strong, capable and experienced teams in marketing, administration, IT, reservations, operations, mechanical workshop, driver/guides and hostesses. The focus of Down Under Tours has always been exceptional customer service and value for money experiences. It has been instilled in our staff that every day you go out you are delivering dreams. Through this philosophy we have continued to flourish and with a major focus on IT, our ability to deliver the best product & experiences to our clients has become a reality. In August 2014, AAT Kings (who are owned by The Travel Corporation (TTC), the largest privately owned travel company in the world) became a majority shareholder of Down Under Tours. Both companies are family owned and have similar business philosophies, and this secures our long term future.
