Our team has a long history of working on the reef and with their diverse knowledge, experience, and expertise, they are perfectly suited to the challenges that face us. Through our training programs we are proud to be teaching and inspiring the next generation of marine biologists, and conservationists as well as working in the consulting field with reef professionals on site stewardship programs. We also have a strong focus on research that feeds back into management.

Blennies are the best. Anyone who says otherwise, we'll fight you!

Although they may not play a hugely important role on a reef, every fish has its place and the blenny is no exception.

Not only are they miniature hunters but they are brilliant photography subjects, holding still and relying on their camouflage to hide them until the very last minute. This lets even the worst photographer amongst us get a beautiful close up!

What are you up to in September? Or any other month for that matter?

Internships are full for June and nearly full for July but there is still a bit of space in the months in the lead up to Christmas. Plus, guess when the best time on the Great Barrier Reef is... yup, September, October... So, what are you waiting for?

Send us a dm and we can send you more information on how to sign up for one of our work placements!

Come back!

Unfortunately this is how we normally see sharks, swimming quickly away from our eager cameras and survey slates.

What's the best shark interaction you've ever had?

After 11 years as Marine Discoveries senior marine biologist and project manager, it is time for me to move on. I started at Marine Discoveries in 2014 and have helped drive the business to where it is today and am incredibly proud of everything that we have done together over the years.

I can't wait to see where Marine Discoveries goes in the future and I wanted to say a huge thank you to all the groups and especially interns that I have had the pleasure of taking out to the reef and teaching over the years.

Gareth, Cara and Tatiana will still be here to answer any marine questions that are desperately needing to be answered but for now, me and Storm will be signing off.

Keep following our social media to see how much the team are going to miss me! :D

Thanks again everyone, Abby, out :) ###

You've heard of elf on a shelf.. but are seastars on your radar? ✨️
We couldn't help but think these seastar arms looked a bit like colourful elf legs sitting on a rock..
A bit like that mystical elf, seastars appear relatively stationary. However, given enough time, they go on big adventures around the reef.

The bright colours of little animals like this flatworm aren't just for decoration!

They are a brilliant way to warn potential predators that if they eat them, they will get sick... sometimes very very sick....😵

Most fish have quite flexible jaws, this Maori wrasse was in the middle of being cleaned by a cleaner wrasse and so was opening up all available spaces to get a thorough clean!

Hey there! Sometimes the small things are not just the hardest to find because of their size, but because of their camouflage. Hunting for the macro life is sometimes the best part of any dive or snorkel trip though. What's the best thing you've ever spotted?

It's the weekend! We're cruising into the weekend after a busy week with our interns and are looking forward to next weeks reef trips! Keep everything crossed for us that the wind behaves itself and drops down a little bit :D

Going slow is one of the best ways to see invertebrates. Due to their timid and nocturnal nature, most of these animals will be hiding during the day, and if you do spot them, will pretend you haven't!
