I’ve seen the photo above shared again on a number of sites. It’s is indeed an iconic shot of Barra and cassowary I took 18 months ago..
When we first started at Copperlode dam we had no idea it had a healthy cassowary population. I have identified 14 different birds, each has its own personality and area. They love chasing wild pigs, it’s quite a sight to behold.
On Australia Day 2019 we saw 8 individuals birds. George features in a number of photos, he is an inquisitive critter and visitor favourite. I’ve attached a number of photographs, enjoy!!!

Fish Kill Warning- Freshwater Creek, Redlynch Valley below Copperlode Dam.

Please read and share the press release. To say we are devastated is an understatement.

On Tuesday, 12 December 2023, Cairns Regional Council ordered the removal of the spillway net from Copperlode Dam without consultation, despite our warning of potential consequences of a major fish kill. The increased likelihood of a fish kill has been substantiated independently by a Fisheries Ecologist.

The spillway net is no longer operational as Cairns Regional Council have facilitated its removal. Copperlode Fish & Kayak have vehemently opposed the removal of the net. The net is engineer designed and fit for purpose, and well maintained with regular servicing. The net has been in place when required for 7 years.

Lake Morris has commenced spilling as the dam is now in excess of 100% capacity, and a fish kill is now imminent. Please forward any reports or images.
