In the 1960s, the Deakin Inn, a definitively not gay venue in Canberra, became a hotspot for hockey-playing lesbians.
Big Friday night mood🔺🔼🔮
The stories we hear about Lake Burley Griffin never cease to amaze us! Make sure to ask for a Lake BG tale on tour, and we might let you in on Canberra’s hidden Atlantis 😉

This week celebrated #nationalpinkday 💖
We love pink here at She Shapes History (can you tell) and took it upon ourselves to find other pink Canberra icons 👀
1. Canberra is renown for its lush sunsets 🌅
2. National Gallery of Australia, Canberra James Turrell’s skyspace ☁️
3. Braddon flowers gorgeous shop interior with a collection of all things pink 🌸
4. the pink pond in Bruce, which is covered in the native aquatic plant Azolla giving it it's colour💧
5. The newly opened Anita Gelato AU 🍦
It can be a struggle to get through a male, stale and pale account of Australia 😅
Don’t get us started on ‘close friends who shared a bed and home for thirty years’ 🙄
Where are the women? 🤔
She Shapes History was born from this exact question! We were reminded of this when googling something as harmless as 'australian historic figures' to find only 2 women made the top 24 results. (Although props to Edith Cowan and Cathy Freeman, both incredible and well deserved of course).
Never fear though, we will continue to find and share the stories of women's contributions to Australia so that names like Fanny Finch and Faith Bandler are as well
known as Ned Kelly and James Cook 🫡
Happy National Walking Day*🚶🏽♀️ This week we asked you why you loved walking tours! Your answers reminded us why we love to run them too 🥹 We chose walking tours because we think that they are the perfect way to share stories together, in a more casual and conversational way that encourages exploring and getting out into the places where history happened 🌞*Of course walking and moving can be a little different for everyone. We specifically develop our routes so they are fully accessible via pram and mobility aids including wheelchairs and walkers 👍 Tell us about one of the best walking tours you’ve been on (not including ours of course) and where in the comments ⬇️
We’re continuing the International Women’s Day spirit and wanted to learn more about what inspires some of the women who are shaping science history at Questacon🧪
Questacon is Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre and is one of our favourite places to visit in Canberra. (You might have spotted the building on one of our walking routes!) 📍
We caught up with Ana Casas and Jo White who are doing incredible work in the STEM world 🌋
Did you know there are mermaids in First Nations culture, likely the earliest depictions and stories of them in the world? 🧜🏽♀️
They are known as Yawkyawk, a word in the Kunwinjku/Kunwok language of Western Arnhem Land meaning ‘young woman’ and ‘young woman spirit being’.
They are depicted in rock art, bark paintings, sculptures and story telling as women with long green algae (called man-bak in Kuninjku) coloured hair and fish tails instead of legs.
The Dreamtime tells of two girls crossing a sacred boundary into water and being transformed!
These Ancestral beings are said to live in the fresh water streams and pools of the region. The Kuninjku often refer to features of Country as parts of Yawkyawk, such as a bend in a river being her tail.
You can see these gorgeous Yawkyawk sculptures by Dorothy Bunibuni, Lulu Laradjbi and Marina Murdilnga at the National Museum of Australia’s exhibition Feared and Revered.

We joined in the Lunar New Year festivities at the one and only Wooley St in Dickson 🐲We of course wanted to know more about the suburb itself and its journey to becoming what is now known as Canberra’s ‘China Town’ 🥢....The Jackie Chan mural was painted by graffiti artists DSEE and Swaze.
HAPPY NATIONAL SPAGHETTI DAY 🍝
Lucy made some pasta and deep dives into how Aussie housewives adapted (bastardised?) the spag bol recipe into now one of the most popular home dinners in Australia!!
How often do you eat spaghetti in a week? 🙈
We only have two weeks left of our LGBTQIA+ Inner-North walking tours for @springoutcbr 😱
We have been LOUD and PROUD and TAKING UP SPACE learning about the contributions of LGBTQIA+ folk to Canberra’s social fabric and progressive reputation 🌈
Have I talked about the history of lesbian porn in public? Yes. Do I have regrets? Not at all 😂
Running Saturdays 2-4:30pm - get your tix at our website before they go 🏃♀️
*Britney Spears not included sorry but you’ll learn about the first female DJ who played commercially in ‘Berra (a lesbian of course)🪩
Happy Halloween 🎃
Learn more about one of Australia’s most haunted hotel rooms 👻
Happy #worldteachersday 🍏
Today we thought we’d share the story of Verity Hewitt, an influential teacher in Canberra’s history (her students include a contrarian primary school aged Gough Whitlam and teaching English to Evdokia Petrova!) She is best known for opening of one Canberra’s first bookstores and sharing her love of learning with an early Canberra starved for stories and knowledge 📚
Happy #WorldTourismDay ✈
At first combining women's history with tourism may seem like an unusual combination - but if you have been on tour you know it works 💯
We at She Shapes History believe you shouldn't have to have a degree in history or read lots of books to feel connected to the places and stories of the past. Walking tours allows us an accessible, fun and casual platform to share these stories with a hugely diverse range of people from Canberra, inter-state and internationally! Tourism is truly an untapped world to foster community and share our identities and experiences ❤️
Big thanks to Screencraft Media and Visit Canberra for the gorgeous video 😮
On this day in 1912 then Prime Minister Andrew Fisher approved wattle as the national emblem and for its use on the Coat of Arms.
Take a walk around the National Triangle with us and see the flower in all its yellow glory 🌞
Meant to symbolise Australian unity and resistance, once it first appears in Canberra everyone knows Spring is finally here!
STOP THE COUNTDOWN! 🚀 You’ve asked and we’ve delivered - our crop tops are now LIVE to BUY 😱
We believe pink crop tops go with everything and look so good on everyone! Plus you’ll be repping the SSH message 💪🏾
Their material is hypoallergenic, anti-static and 100% biodegradable. They are made from a mix of cotton and cupro meaning our shirts are made with waste the cotton industry leaves behind. How cool is that?!
Go to https://sheshapeshistory.com.au/shop#!/tproduct/465242046-1500469911302 to get yours now - we can’t wait to see them out in the wild (give us a tag to feature?) 😘
If crops aren’t your thing that’s okay, this is our test run and we want to launch more merch in future so stay tuned 👀
To finish science week we have guest star Beth, Maths grad and numbers guru, share some of her favourite facts about triangles!
Our signature tour, Badass Women of Canberra, takes you for a 3km walk of the National Triangle it really lives up to its name, look at all these triangles!!!!
In the original designers of Canberra, Walter and Marion Griffin’s plan, each corner of the National Triangle represented a key aspect of what they saw as essential to a strong democracy: the people, the government and a free market. This triangle intersects the Land Axis – from Mt Ainslie through Capital Hill (Parliament House) to Bimberri Peak – and includes the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin.
