We welcomed Independent for Canberra candidate Thomas Emerson to our head office on Friday where he met with our CEO and Executive Director of Community Services.

They discussed the current state of the community sector and Tom then took time to meet with our Community Development Officer to hear about our food pantry and the increasing need for assistance from families and individuals across the ACT.

Thanks for dropping in Tom - your interest in CS #1 and the growing need of many vulnerable people in the area is much appreciated.

How lucky we are to have clients like Alma!

Alma has been using CS #1's services for many years and thinks she might be our longest standing client. Back when CS #1 was Southside Community Services, she helped her mother get to seniors and social support groups.

After the death of her mother, Alma became a volunteer and helped take our clients on group excursions around Canberra before eventually became a client herself.

These days Alma is a member of the Chair Yoga group, the Intergenerational Group, and Nest Cooking Classes. She also uses the Food Pantry which she says gives her access to fresh produce that she might otherwise not be able to afford.

Alma says that being part of the seniors and social support groups gives her company and social connection but also satisfaction having helped connect many of her friends to CS #1's services.

In Alma's words - she's going to stay as active right up until the end and has no plans to slow down! She apologised for her sunglasses - her hay fever is a nightmare right now... we just thought it was part of the cool outfit.

Training sessions are all the same right? A bit of an introduction before some group work, break for snacks, more group work before a few empowering words from the facilitator to send you on your way.

Not if Paul Sinclair from Mirri Mirri Cultural Training has anything to do with it!

Yesterday Paul ran two 3-hour sessions for CS #1 staff and managed to have both groups fully engaged from beginning to end.

The program was chosen to enlighten staff and deliver an increased understanding and connection with our First Nations cultures. Topics covered included unconscious bias, impacts of colonialism, intergenerational trauma and culturally responsive environments.

Paul seems to have bucket loads of energy and delivered an engaging, thought provoking, relevant and impactful session which left the group energized - just look at the faces!

Whether it's in the workplace, the home, among friends and family, neighbours and beyond. Sometimes digging a little below the surface can be really impactful.

Take a moment to think about the people in your world - do you think any of them might need some extra help or support?

This RUOK day we're reminded of ALEC:
1. Ask RUOK?
2. Listen with and open mind
3. Encourage action
4. Check back in and follow up

Our newest centre grows by the day! The purpose built Watson Early Childhood Education and Care Centre (pending service approval) is under construction and will be ready for completion in late 2024 to start educating and caring for young children in early 2025.

As with all our Early Childhood Education and Care Centres - your child is the focus and we strive always to provide the highest quality early education and care.

have done it again!

Late last week they rolled up to our head office in Narrabundah and dropped off a whole pallet of 127 bags of personal items including shampoo, deodorant, period products, makeup and more.

The bags will be distributed to our pantry clients who would likely go without many of these necessities.

We love the work Share the Dignity do across Australia. Please keep doing the great work of making lift so much easier for so many.
