At Mulga Tours pedalling through stunning landscapes, stopping to soak in the view, meeting the people, and capturing the memories you only get on a bike is more important than arriving by a particular time or squeezing in as many kilometres as we can. For us, pedalling through stunning landscapes, smelling the air, soaking in the view and meeting the people are more important than arriving by a p

articular time or squeezing in as many kilometres as we can. We’ve cycled all our tour routes ourselves unsupported – they’re places we have enjoyed and they’re places we’d like to share with you. We don’t like to rough it at Mulga!

Bill's Roadside Cafe is always a very popular stop on our tours.

We have even had the public pull over to see if they can get a coffee. 😂

Who is Bill? You will find the answer here: https://bit.ly/3Tztk2f

Spirit of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia 12-Day Tour
26th Nov - 8th Dec 2024

South Australia's Eyre Peninsula is one of those regions that should be added to the list of best cycling destinations in Australia if not the world.

Celebrated for its delicious and abundant seafood and adventure experiences, the Eyre Peninsula’s rugged and unspoilt coastline, historic towns and ports, national parks, gently undulating country and bike friendly roads make this a perfect destination for cycling.

Our bicycle journey starts in the century old frontier town of Ceduna on the ‘West Coast’ finishing 12 days later in Cowell on the Spencer Gulf. Travelling mostly on sealed roads we keep to the coastline following the Seafood Frontier touring route with a couple of detours into the interior.

If you wish you can even ramp up the excitement and go cage diving with Great White Sharks 🦈. What more could you want from a bike tour?

We organise and carry everything.
All you have to do is ride! 🚲

Small groups (maximum 14), delicious seafood 🦐🦞🦀🐟🦪 and wine🍷, fascinating tours, comfy beds and a focus on safety (not on beating the clock!) means a smooth ride with Mulga Bicycle Tours.

Navigating the Road Together 🚛 🚲
A snapshot of safe coexistence.

At Mulga, safety is our priority, especially when sharing the highway with heavy vehicles.

Use this link to learn how we foster a safe environment for all.

https://bit.ly/49MfrmM

The following is a short extract.

We will park a vehicle in front of you and another behind you with amber flashing lights and “Cyclist Ahead” signs. When a heavy vehicle or caravan passes the rear vehicle we will first try to inform you [using the UHF radio we fit to the top tube of your bike] that it is on its way and then we will try and contact the heavy vehicle or caravan to let them know how many cyclists are on the road and where they may expect to find you.

… Driving heavy vehicles on regional roads is not an easy task as their extra mass, width and reduced stopping capability limit their ability to avoid a crash.

… We require that when space is limited you help the drivers of these heavy vehicles by stopping [and getting off the road] well in advance of the heavy vehicle reaching you to let them pass.
.. We have all heard the negative comments about cyclists using the roads, so to help promote cycling in a positive manner and to reduce our impact on other road users [in particular the heavy vehicles] we ask that when safe to do so, you stop to let motorists queued behind you pass.

Clare Valley & Souther Flinders Ranges – 14 day tour
21 October – 3 November 2024

This two-week cycling holiday provides you with the opportunity to explore and experience two very unique and historically rich areas of South Australia – The Clare Valley and The Southern Flinders Ranges.

In week one, think rolling hills, fertile valleys, and lush green vineyards, and in week two, stunning, rugged outback landscapes. And in between, the rich colonial agricultural and mining past that was once connected by the now abandoned railway lines.

A feature of this tour is you will only have to pack and move your bags three times. To make your cycling holiday more relaxed we will be basing ourselves in Watervale for 7 nights, Quorn for 5 and a single night in between at Stone Hut.

We organise and carry everything.
All you have to do is ride!

Small groups (maximum 14), delicious food and wine, fascinating tours, comfy beds and a focus on safety (not on beating the clock!) means a smooth ride with Mulga Bicycle Tours.

Roma’s Largest Bottle Tree - continued

You can buy your own Narrow Leafed Bottle Tree from a well known Roma road-side stall, which we did in 2022, but our tree was eaten by Canberra slugs and snails and did not survive the Canberra winter.

In Spring 2023 we discovered a very ill looking Narrow Leafed Bottle Tree seedling in a Canberra nursery that only had parts of two sick looking leaves. We took it home and placed it in root pouch from . As you can see it is doing OK but it still gets attacked by a leaf eating insect that takes chunks out of the leaves at night. This time it is not snails or slugs.

Do you have any suggestions what could be eating the leaves?

We will keep looking after it in the root pouch and plant it out next spring. We reason if Roma can transplant a mature tree we should be able to transplant this little bottle tree. Fingers crossed.

Roma’s Largest Bottle Tree

The Narrow Leafed Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestre) is a common feature on our 9 Day bicycle tour along the Great Inland Way to Carnarvon Gorge.

This particular Narrow Leafed Bottle Tree is the largest bottle tree in Roma and was transplanted from a local property to its current location in 1927.

The information sign says it requires six average sized men to reach around its girth.

We started bringing cycling tours to Roma before the protective board walk was put in place and at this time it took 9 average cyclists to reach around the tree.

Have we accidentally created the inspiration for a new bicycle ride!

This is a fun image we created whilst exploring the AI driven Generative Fill feature in Adobe Photoshop 2024. It took less 5 minutes to create.

We started with two photos randomly selected from our photo library. On the left a photo of Denise taken near Forbes, NSW, and on the right a photo we took in South Australia's Painted Desert. We then set Photoshop to blend the two together. Finally we replaced the sky using a stock sunset included in Photoshop Sky Replacement feature.

We are now wondering if we need to plan a ride from Forbes to The Painted Desert.

Our post about our recent night ride to watch Canberra's 2024 Australia Day SkyShow over Lake Burley Griffin prompted a number of questions about the lights we use on our bikes. So we decided to write this blog post about the lights we use.

The bike lights we use at Mulga Bicycle Tours to help us see, be seen, and keep us safe when cycling during the day and at night.
