This 2024 International Lighthouse Heritage weekend we are running a very special program at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse – it’s ‘HUG A LIGHTHOUSE’ weekend! No matter what the weather brings the lighthouse will still operate and we'll be there running the tours from 11am on the hour through to 4pm on each day. We've been having a Whale of a time at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse on the Mornington Peninsula over the past week with many Humpback whale sightings as they travel through Bass Strait on their annual migration.

On Saturday 15 June 2024 I had the most amazing experience and did the Precision Helicopters flight with John Ibbotson out to the South Solitary Island Lighthouse. I am still recovering from the damaging, well over 50km winds on the island – so strong it was hard to stand up without stumbling, and definitely chilling. Only inside the buildings could I feel stable; outside it was blow over material, so my apologies for the photos as they were really hard to take in the strong wind. The tour by the Discovery Ranger, Carolyn McPhee from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, was excellent and she displayed great knowledge, compassion and a real love for the Island and the Lighthouse keepers – so special. This is a Lighthouse tour I could definitely recommend to everyone – a bit e###xxy!, only during the May to September period each year, about every 3 weeks. And I hope you don’t have the wind I had to contend with. I loved knowing that the South Solitary Island Lighthouse stories are being told as a testament to our Lighthouse Maritime Heritage. Go and do this tour if you get the opportunity. The Helicopter flight with the Precision Helicopters crew was great too.
John Ibbotson who photographed the lighthouse in 1996 for his Lighthouse books commented that “the repairs by FOSSIL and others to the buildings is quite remarkable in regard to the quality that has been done”.

GHOST WALK ‘DARK’ LIGHTHOUSE SITE TOURS
Tall tales and true of our lighthouse ghosts and stories.
Dare to be scared!
Sunday, 30 June 2024, 165 years to the day that the Cape Schanck Lighthouse was first illuminated by Head Lighthouse keeper Robert Bowie and his Assistant William Fish.
You never know who you will meet in a torchlight walk around the lighthouse grounds or at the lookout beneath the lighthouse.
Tours start from the Red Brick House at 5pm & 6pm following the last Lighthouse tour starting at 4pm. Please arrive 10 minutes early.
Note: By order of AMSA Ghost Walk tours do not actually enter the Lighthouse.
Book into the last Lighthouse tour at 4pm if you want to go inside the Lighthouse.
For the Ghost Walk wear Sturdy footwear and bring a coat and torch with you.

No Lighthouse tours at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse on Sunday 21 April 2024 as Janice Haynes The Lady of History will be attending the Life celebration for Jenny Bowker who was leaseholder at the Cape Otway Lighthouse through Tourism Great Ocean Road. Rest well lovely lady!
