In 1988, discussions between Ron & Bev White of Wilangi Brahman Stud, Errol & Estelle Cole of Lapunyah Stud and Ken McCaffrey, Elders Pastoral Stud Stock Manager led to the establishment later that year, in Charters Towers, of what is now the Wilangi Invitation Brahman Sale. In its first staging, on Friday 25th November 1988, it was named the Lapunyah Wilangi Beef Brahman Sale. To
many it seemed an ill-thought out and risky venture to stake a major bull sale claim in Charters Towers, which at that time, was not on the Stud cattle selling calendar and did not even have a regular weekly cattle sale. But to Ken, the Whites and the Coles it was about having confidence in the growth and development of the beef cattle industry of the North; creating a trusting relationship with Northern graziers aligned with their desire to access well bred, select quality, high performance bulls closer to their properties; and recognising that Charters Towers, at the crossroads of major cattle industry supply routes, was ideally situated and would benefit from and respond to positive exposure from a high profile stud cattle sale in the town. The Sale’s undertaking is simple – keep the Sale of a high standard in genetics, performance, presentation and relevant to the best of beef industry markets; think also of the Sale from a buyer’s point of view; keep innovating for buyers benefit; and present the Sale selection every year without fail and, always meet the market! The history is rich; the Sale success, right from the first in 1988, has been the catalyst over the years for innumerable benefits which have flowed to the Brahman breed and its Association, to Charters Towers and to the Northern beef cattle industry. In 2021 the Annual Wilangi Invitation Brahman Sale surpassed 9,000 Lots sold, a rare achievement in the Australian Stud Stock industry for a Private Vendor Auction Sale.
