Enjoy your holidays the smart way - be aware of king tides: Monday 25 December to Friday 29 December 2023 + Wednesday 10 – Tuesday 16 January 2024 (inclusive):

King tides = lots of water moving in and out of creeks and rivers and along our foreshores. Large outgoing tides in creeks can sweep unwary people (especially children) out to sea or along rocks which more than likely have oysters.

Also be aware of snags from dead trees within creek systems as these have the potential to catch swimmers and people on flotation devices. These large tidal changes can also create larger rip currents on open beaches.

Tides that may cause issues will be exp erienced on the following dates:
• Mon 25 Dec – Fri 29 Dec 2023 (inclusive)
• Wed 10 Jan – Tue 16 Jan 2024 (inclusive)
- keep a close eye on condition and weather reports during these times.

The best way to stay safe from getting caught in a rip is to always swim between the flags on patrolled beaches. Beach patrols times and locations

Bluebottles are the scourge of the summer holidays. However, they are a very interesting creature…

It’s not a Jellyfish, it’s a zooid and is made up of four different colonies of polyps which rely on each other to survive.
They can sting though and First Aid treatment is as follows:
- DRSABC - Wash the stung area with salt-water (be careful you don’t get stung again). Always stand upwind and pick any tentacles off the skin using your fingers (the skin of your fingers is normally tough enough to not be affected). If concerned, where gloves.

- Submerge the stung area in hot water (as hot as the casualty can stand without causing scalding). If hot water is unavailable, some relief may be gained by ice-packs, however ice packs do not work in many cases.
