Jarlshof, one of the most remarkable archeological sites ever discovered in the UK, where 4000 years of human settlement were unearthed 100 years ago when violent storms uncovered the massive stonework, showcasing buildings from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, a Viking village and a medieval farmstead.

Exploring the ancient mysteries of Orkney with Archaeologist, Viking and Neolithic expert Dr. Colleen Batey has been a truly incredible start to our expedition. From the windswept beauty of Birsay to the incredible ruins of Skara Brae, every moment has been steeped in history and wonder. A monument to the fabled Alfred Russel Wallace stands as a sentinel to the glorious forests of the Tangkoko National Park. Within moments of arriving, we were startled by the site of the regal, Green Backed Kingfisher. Before we could catch our breath, our guide rushed us over for a glimpse of the Yellow Billed Malkoha. While this multi-colored Cuckoo dropped fruit from the trees, a troop of Black Macaques picked up the leftovers from the forest floor. These powerfully built “Baboons of East” are adorned with heavy brow ridges and a spectacular hairy crest, the envy of every human teenage rebel. While we ventured deeper into the forest, the haunting calls of Green Imperial Pigeons resonated through the arboreal gallery. As darkness descended upon the jungle, we gathered around the tangled roots of a strangling fig, awaiting the star of the Sulawesi forest. Announcing their presence with an adorable chirp, the gremlin-like Spectral Tarsiers emerged from their deep hollows. Graced with enormous eyes and delicate fingers, these tiny forest fairies leap from branch to branch in search of insect meals. We basked in the wonder of this enigmatic beastie before they slipped out of sight, for a night of nocturnal mischief. The forest held a final surprise for the night… a family of Sulawesi Bear Cuscus. Finally, my first incredible and very close underwater Mola Mola (sunfish) encounters in the deep waters off Nusa Penida. To watch 3 of these gentle giants come up from the deep to get cleaned by Bannerfish less than 2m away was an extraordinary encounter that will stay with me, Estelle and our Wild Earth Explorers forever. An incredible day with millions of Monarch butterflies in the biosphere reserve in central Mexico. Huge cluster taking off. You can hear their wing beats as they collectively stir before settled back on a branch. At times there are so many on one branch that the weight can snap the branch. Having a whale 🐋 of a time with gray whales in remote San Ignacio lagoon. 4hrs non stop whale interactions. This one stayed with us for over an hour just wanting to be scrubbed and touched. One of my top 5 EVER wildlife encounters!!! Hands down. Words cannot describe what we experienced this afternoon. Magic Wild Earth Experience.
