Spanish mackerel fishing is back on along the entire east coast of Queensland from midnight tonight.

This signals the end of the first southern closure, which applies to east coast waters south of latitude 22˚S (located slightly north of Stanage Bay, between Mackay and Yeppoon – highlighted in red on the map).

There will be an 8-day window to fish for this species until the second southern closure begins on March 1.

The second of this year’s Spanish Mackerel northern closures begins today and runs until 11.59pm on Friday, 1 December.

The closure applies to east coast waters north of latitude 22˚S — located slightly north of Stanage Bay (indicated in the shaded blue area on the map).

Just a reminder that fishers are no longer permitted to possess Spanish Mackerel taken outside of closed waters if they enter closed waters during seasonal closures.

Compliance with the new rules has been of a high standard and we thank fishers for their efforts to abide by them.

🚫WHITSUNDAY FIRE BAN EXTENDED 🚫
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES advise that, due to heightened fire conditions, a local fire ban has been extended and will remain in place until 2359 Tuesday, 7 November 2023.
Regional Council Areas included in the ban are:
- Whitsunday
- Mackay
- Isaac
- Central Highlands
Under a local fire ban all open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been suspended for the duration of the ban.

The east coast barramundi closure begins today and runs through to the end of January.

But did you know that it was only in the 1980s that the name ‘barramundi’ was formally adopted by our seafood industry? Before this, it was known as Asian sea bass.

Meaning “large-scaled river fish”, the indigenous name ‘barramundi’, from the Rockhampton region, is thought to have originally referred to the less appetising saratoga.

The east coast closure is in place so we can conserve the iconic barramundi for future generations to also enjoy.

🎣Glorious weekend coming up with East-North-Easterly winds 10 to 15 knots Saturday and easing to 10 knots on Sunday. Those boats heading offshore make sure to check your local weather sites before heading out or give VMR a call as conditions may change.

This weekend we have a Reef Fin Fish Closure which started Thursday 12th October and runs through to 16th October 2023 inclusive. We also have a Spanish Mackerel closure from the 12th October to 2nd November inclusive.

2. Cobia or Black King
3. Estuary Cod Both Blackspot and Goldspot
4. Fingermark
5. Grass Sweetlip
6. Grunter
7. All Mackerel Species EXCEPT Spanish Mackerel

10. Black Jew Fish (if the TACC has not been reached)

Fisheries Queensland have advised that the first of this year’s Spanish Mackerel northern closures began yesterday and will run until 11.59pm on Thursday, 2 November.
The closure applies to east coast waters north of latitude 22˚S — located slightly north of Stanage Bay (indicated in the shaded blue area on the map).
The first of two five-day coral reef fin fish closures also started yesterday in waters north of 24˚ 50’S, and runs until 11.59pm on Monday, 16 October.
