Congratulations to our mentee Louise Freckelton of Kestrel Nest EcoHut and Highfield Farm and Woodland near Gundagai for being featured by Destination Riverina Murray for International Women's Day!

I love working with Louise! This morning's email from her was a long list of what's she's been working on all week - while she was on holiday! You can't hold back a good woman!

From DRM: "We grabbed 5 minutes to hear more about her business, what she’s working on and her proudest accomplishments.

Q: Tell us about your business, Louise.
A: Kestrel Nest is a self-contained stay and sits on Highfield Farm and Woodland which uniquely combines small-scale ecological farming with the protection of endangered habitats. With no phone reception and no Wi-Fi, guests can turn off and tune in to nature.

Q: What do you love about working in tourism?
A: Providing an authentic and heartfelt experience that people love. We leap on our guest book the moment they leave to read how much they enjoy being off-line, reconnecting with each other and nature. They're often in awe at how little energy they used with our off-grid experience!

Q: And what are you most proud of?
A: Three things, actually.

1. Having our stay and tours certified by Ecotourism Australia — extra assurance that we aren’t greenwashing.

2. Our perfect 5-star reviews on Airbnb and Google.

3. Taking out Bronze in the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards. We are the ONLY accommodation provider to ever medal in the Ecotourism category.

Q: What are you working on right now that excites you?
A: We did our Greenhouse Gas Emissions calculation for 2023. It’s tiny and easily offset, plus we'll reduce our emissions further every year.

We’re also signposting 14 kilometres of trails for guests to explore, highlighting the best spots, and we’ve opened one of our farm dams for fishing, stocked with delicious native Silver Perch.

There's another truly ground-breaking initiative planned but it’s too early to talk about!"
