* PRESENTER SNAPSHOT * - Shana Bremner, Bass Coast Shire Council Waste Education Officer
When it comes to waste, there is no doubt that Bass Coast is regarded as a leader amongst Victorian councils. Since the introduction of the kerbside ‘green bin’ (Food Organics and Garden Organics) in 2017, Bass Coast has been recognised as the very best of Victoria’s 79 local government areas when it comes to diverting kerbside waste from landfill – three years in a row! In Bass Coast, around 75% of our kerbside waste is sent off to be recycled or composted – clearly demonstrating our community’s determination to keep waste out of landfill. The Bass Coast community deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated for their brilliant recycling efforts, but there is still plenty of room to improve further. Bass Coast Shire Council has set a goal to achieve net zero emissions across our community by 2030 – and one of the key actions for all of us is “Buy less. Recycle and reuse more to achieve zero waste”.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Education Officer, Shana Bremner is passionate about supporting our community to avoid waste and contribute to a circular economy. Shana will be providing an overview of the Victorian government’s pathway to getting us all to waste less and recycle more – ‘Recycling Victoria: A new economy’ – focusing on the latest reforms that are going to impact Bass Coast and our approach to waste management in the coming months and years.
