JAPANESE WAR CEMETERY πŸͺ¦

Established in 1964, Cowra is home to the only Japanese War Cemetery to be retained in Australia. There are 523 graves at the Japanese War Cemetery, containing the remains of the 231 Japanese soldiers who were killed in the 1944 Cowra Breakout and all Japanese Nationals who died on Australian soil during World War II.

Before 1964, the Japanese Cemetery had been cared for informally by members of the Cowra Sub-Branch, who kept the lawns mowed and the weeds in check. This was done as a mark of respect for the fallen soldiers at a time when there were mixed feelings concerning the Japanese.

Today, we encourage you to pay your respects at this solemn place. . .

The Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell is made of coins provided by 103 member countries of the United Nations, which were melted down and cast into the bell which is a replica of a bell outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York. . .

COWRA BREAKOUT COMMEMORATIVE SCULPTURE

Designed by artist Wayne Miles for the 75th Anniversary of the Cowra Breakout, a five-panel sculpture is situated at the POW Camp. The five steel sheets, each measuring 2x4 metres, depict silhouettes of those directly affected by the Breakout - an Australian guard, a Japanese POW, an Italian POW and an Indonesian mother and child.

The centre panel provides information about the artwork:
β€œThese four panels depict the aspects of the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp over its six-year life from 1941 to 1947 .. the Australian Soldier on guard, Japanese playing baseball, Italians and their love of music, and the Indonesian mothers and children. This relatively calm time was shattered in the early morning of the 5th August 1944. The Breakout resulted in the deaths of 234 Japanese and 5 Australians”

The memorial was supported by the Cowra Council, COWRA Lions Club Inc., Australian Lions Foundation, and Cowra Breakout Association . .

BIRD WATCHING πŸ¦πŸ“

The landscape of Cowra varies from the rich agricultural river flats to the slopes and rolling hills of the Lachlan Valley. From relatively untouched native vegetation in our National Parks, to small remnant of native bush found along old Travelling Stock Reserves (TSR), there are many great places to spot woodland birds throughout the Shire.

The Cowra Region is home to a number of threatened or declining species, including the Superb Parrot, Swift Parrot, Black-Chinned Honeyeater, Diamond Firetail, Brown Treecreeper, Barking Owl, Speckled Warbler and Hooded Robin.

For detailed information on the best places in the region to spot local birdlife, pick up a copy of Bird Routes of Cowra brochure from the Cowra Visitor Information Centre or download it via our website.
