POW CAMPSITE ๐Ÿช–

Cowra is steeped in rich history and heritage, with much of the townโ€™s legacy starting at the Cowra Prisoner of War (POW) Campsite.

At 1:50am on the 5th of August 1944, over 1000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass escape from the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp. Armed with crude weapons, four groups each of approximately 300 Japanese threw themselves on to barbed wire fences and into the firing line of Vickers machine guns. Protected only by baseball mitts, blankets, and coats and using their comrades as a human bridge to cross the tangled barbed wire, more than 350 Japanese clawed their way to freedom. All escapees were captured during the following week. A total of 107 POWs were wounded, 234 prisoners died along with 5 Australian soldiers.

From the tragedy of war and the Cowra Breakout came a long-lasting friendship between the people of Cowra and the nation of Japan. There is much in Cowra today which serves as a reminder to these events.

The ruins of the Prisoner of War Campsite are still visible to this day with well-placed interpretive signage will help you visualize what once stood in this picturesque part of Cowra. Stand under the replica Guard Tower where a detailed audio presentation will bring the scenery around you to life.

Take the time to reflect upon the horrific tragedy that occur on this site and the beautiful story of reconciliation that followed.

GALARI BILA (LACHLAN RIVER) ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Looking to get out in nature? Take a stroll down the Galari River (Lachlan River) walk.

The Galari Bila Walk starts under the Cowra Bridge, home to the impressive Indigenous Bridge Pylon Murals. Visitors can enjoy a gentle stroll along the Erambie shared path set next to the banks of the Lachlan River. Picnic tables and grassed areas provide the ideal space to relax, enjoy a picnic or throw a line in for a spot of fishing.

A leash-free dog park is nearby offering a place for the furry members of the family to run about and enjoy the sunshine. . .

2024 NSW TOURISM AWARDS โญ

The Cowra Tourism Team were thrilled to attend the 2024 NSW Tourism Awards last week in Sydney. It was wonderful for us to take some time to reflect on the significant achievements we have made in the past couple of years. None of the work we do would be possible without our dedicated, small team of three (plus our wonderful casuals).

Congratulations to our friends at Visit Bathurst NSW who took out the Gold Award for Best Visitor Information Services. We love seeing winners from the Central West! Congratulations to all other finalists and thank you to the NSW Tourism Association for the honour!

The NSW Tourism Awards represent the pinnacle of recognition in the stateโ€™s tourism sector and serves as the only pathway for NSW businesses to compete at the national level through the Australian Tourism Awards.

COWRA EAGLE SCULPTURE ๐Ÿฆ…

The sculptured Cowra Eagle was made in 1972. The idea for the sculpture came from Don Kibbler who was also the designer. The design chosen was โ€˜rocks with an eagle on topโ€™, which was originally the design for the Cowra Municipal Councilโ€™s corporate seal designed in 1888. It comes from the name โ€œCoura Rocksโ€, one of the early names for the town.

The eagle was fabricated by Colin Cranny of Lachlan Steel. The legs are made from two bore casings donated by Dick Murney.

The original design did not include the two shoulders. These were constructed and added to the wings prior to painting by renowned Cowra sign writer Peter Slattery.

The eagle was originally positioned on the site of the Cowra Visitor Centre but was moved to its current location in 1987 when construction began on the Visitors Centre building. In its original position the eagle was surrounded by granite rocks, this showed only a small portion of the legs and gave the impression that it was sitting on the rocks in a typical Cowra landscape.

Details provided by Don Kibbler in 2015.

COWRA POW HOLOGRAM ๐Ÿ“ฝ

When was the last time you watched the Cowra POW Hologram?

Located in the tin hut at the back of the Cowra Visitor and Information Centre, the Hologram is a 9 minute presentation that tells the story of the Cowra Breakout and its aftermath through the eyes of 'Claire', a young Cowra girl.

The presentation is aimed at raising awareness of the historical significance of Cowra in modern military history and to encourage visitation to other local attractions and locations of historical importance.

The famous POW Hologram Theatre is the best place to start your historical journey through the Cowra region.
