When you visit the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the most beloved landing sites is Danco Island.

Located in the Errera Channel, this one-mile long island is often a favourite landing site of both passengers and crew. Named after Emile Danco, a geophysicist and member of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, this island offers a large gentoo penguin colony and a hike to the island’s peak, offering some of the most spectacular views.

If you’re lucky enough to visit on a clear day, you’re in for a treat!

It can be nerve-wracking to plan a trip on your own, but Antarctica is actually an amazing destination for solo travellers. Many ships, especially those with ample single cabins, are going to attract other single travellers, so you definitely won’t be alone!

When it comes to long distance travel, few can beat the epic journey of a whale!

Researchers from Happywhale, a citizen science project proudly supported by Chimu Adventures onboard our ships, recently discovered a humpback whale that made a record journey of more than 13,000km from South America to Africa. This is the longest ever measured from a single whale.

Kayaking in Antarctica is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the completely unique polar environment. Removed from the sounds and comforts of the ship, and away from the crowds on landing sites, kayaking allows you to be still and take in Antarctica as it truly is, untouched and natural.

Being on the water level, you’ll hear the beautiful crackling of sea ice, you’ll observe porpoising penguins and breaching humpbacks, or you might even spot a leopard seal on an ice floe, napping in the sun. Most Antarctic ships will offer kayaking in one of two ways: via an immersive daily sea kayaking program or a one-off kayaking experience, referred to as a day paddle.

How much fitness is required to travel to Antarctica?

Many travellers wonder about the level of fitness best suited for an Antarctic cruise, but you might be surprised that it’s not as much as you think. Travellers of all ages can experience Antarctica. Generally, it helps to have reasonable fitness, but landings usually don’t require you to walk long distances and you can always tailor your activities to match how you’re feeling that day.

However, everyone’s health is unique, so it’s best to talk to your doctor if you have any questions about Antarctica cruising. You can also speak to Chimu’s Destination Specialists, as they’ve travelled to Antarctica extensively and can answer your questions based on first-hand experience.

A23a is on the move again!

At 3,800 sq km in size, this vast iceberg was trapped in a vortex for more than a year, but is now moving again - and if you visited Antarctica with Chimu last season, you may have been lucky enough to see it for yourself.

The world's biggest iceberg is drifting towards the Atlantic Ocean after being stuck near Antarctica.
