G’day and welcome to Somerset.

Located in the heart of Southeast Queensland, we’re just over an hour from Brisbane CBD and the gateway to Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast. We’re a large region of lakes and landscapes, in fact we’ve got 5,382km2 of countryside for you to explore. We’re home to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, Australia’s longest recreational rail trail, so there’s 161km of high-quality track just waiting for you

to cycle, hike or horse-ride. Our lakes are second to none and the perfect spot to drop a line or take a dip. Our little country towns are the heartbeat of our region. We are proud of our small local businesses, who still believe in country hospitality and value high quality produce and experiences. Here in Somerset, we also love a generous serving of home-cooked tucker. That’s why our local cafes and pubs always serve up the goods packed with fresh Somerset flavours. What’s more, with a range of accommodation styles available, there’s always plenty of room to stay when you visit.

TC ALFRED MAKING LANDFALL LATE THURSDAY/EARLY FRIDAY

Council advises people in the region to PREPARE NOW for the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which is moving towards the South East Queensland coast.

For sandbags, call the SES on 132 500.

What are we expecting?
Forecasts predict Tropical Cyclone Alfred will make landfall between Thursday evening, 6 March and Friday morning, 7 March with a category 2 rating. Today is crucial for preparing your home, family and contents for the impacts of TC Alfred.
To prepare, tie down or remove loose items in your yard, park your car undercover or away from trees, create back-up plans if you need to evacuate and pack an emergency kit in the event of isolation from flooding or power outages.

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the QLD SES on 132 500 or download the SES Assistance QLD App. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Conditions will get worse as it gets closer to land. You could expect:
• Very strong winds that could knock down trees, powerlines, and blow roofs off.
• Power, phone, internet, and water might stop working.
• Heavy rain and storm surge may cause flooding in some places.
• Roads could be blocked by debris or flood water. Some areas may be isolated.
• Stores may be closed and limit access to groceries and essential items.

What you need to do:
• Find out how to ready for a tropical cyclone and make an emergency kit at getready.qld.gov.au/get-prepared
• Clean up around your home and tie down anything outside that could blow away in strong winds.
• Tell friends, family, and neighbours in the area.

If you find it hard to move quickly or have special or medical needs:
• Use your Person-Centred Emergency Plan (P-CEP) now if you have one.
• Make sure you have enough medicine for at least one week.
• If anyone in your house uses powered medical equipment, like a dialysis machine or ventilator, decide now where you will go in case you lose power.
• Call your support person or service to organise transport if you need to leave.
• Leaving early is safer than waiting.

If you are a tourist, visitor, camper or caravanner:
• Campers and caravanners should start packing up now.
• If you do not need to be in the warning area, leave now. Check road conditions and plan your route before you leave.
• If you stay, ask accommodation staff where to shelter if the cyclone comes.

For more information:
• Follow our local council disaster dashboard here disaster.somerset.qld.gov.au
• Listen to your local ABC radio on 612am.
• For power outage information go to energex.com.au
• Check the latest weather, warnings, rainfall, and river heights at bom.gov.au/qld
• Check road closures at qldtraffic.qld.gov.au or for phone service call 13 19 40.
