BREAKING: The Ekka public holiday will be moved to Friday, 29 October after the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The new public holiday applies to the Local Government Areas of Brisbane, the Scenic Rim and Moreton Bay.

Last year, the People’s Long Weekend was a huge success, generating millions of tourism dollars for regional operators across the state with many accommodation providers fully booked out.

I’m encouraging Queenslanders to once again take the opportunity to get out and explore all the wonderful destinations and experiences our state has to offer.

Moving the public holiday wasn’t a decision we made lightly, but it will help support Queensland tourism and hospitality jobs.

QPWS rangers are investigating yesterday’s wongari (dingo) attack at Orchid Beach on K’gari (Fraser Island) and are calling for any further witnesses to come forward.

Rangers have interviewed some witnesses to the incident, however, those first on the scene have so far not been able to be located.

Rangers are seeking assistance from the first responders and any other witnesses to come forward to help investigating rangers understand better what happened and help with information on the wongari (dingo) involved in the attack.

The attack took place in Orchid Beach, a residential area of K’gari, and not in a camping area, Saturday morning around 7am.

Any decisions about the management of the wonagri (dingo) will be made once a positive identification is confirmed and in collaboration with key stakeholders, including traditional owners, the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation - BAC .

People are reminded to be wongari (dingo) safe and not to feed or interact with the animals as this may contribute to their habituation and may have consequences.

Wongari (dingoes) that lose their natural wariness of people and become habituated may become aggressive while seeking food.

Visitors to K'gari (Fraser Island) are reminded to be wongari (dingo) safe at all times:

• Walk in groups
• Camp in fenced areas where possible
• Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative wongari (dingo) interaction
• Never feed dingoes
• Never store food or food containers in tents
• Secure all rubbish, fish and bait
• Keep young children within arm’s reach at all times.

Witnesses to yesterday’s attack are urged to please telephone the Department on 13 GOV (13 74 68).
