Southern right whales are on the move! 🐳

In the summer months, southern right whales are beginning their long migration South from Australia's warm calving grounds to their nutrient-rich feeding areas. From the sub-Antarctic waters around New Zealand to the coasts of Western Australia and South Australia, these majestic whales are following ocean currents that guide them to the best feeding spots along the Antarctic coast. 🌊

Stay tuned as these incredible creatures make their way across the Southern Ocean—truly a remarkable feat of nature!

Each year, after a season of feeding, humpback whales make their epic 10,000 km journey to warmer, sub-tropical seas to mate and give birth before returning back to Antarctica. 🐳

From June to November, they pass coastal spots like Flinders Bay, Jurien Bay, and Pender Bay, attracting thousands of awe-struck visitors. 😮

The migration unfolds in stages, led by young males and followed by pregnant females and cow-calf pairs. Timing varies with ocean conditions, making each season unique.

After passing through our west coast, humpback whales continue their journey toward the feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.

They head to these nutrient-rich waters to feast on krill and small fish throughout the Antarctic summer, building up energy reserves for the next migration season. 💦

Schools out for us land dwellers but the lessons are just beginning for mother and calf! 🐋📚✏️ Captain Richard sends us this footage from Wednesday’s tour out of Hillarys Boardwalk - Hillarys Boat Harbour where another mother was spotted teaching her calf (who pops up for a moment) how to pec slap. Play with audio 🔊 to hear just how loud these slaps are! 👋🐋💙

Pec slaps galore! Crew member Will shot this great footage of a mother and her calf passing by on Sunday’s tour. Our resident expert Brooke from AQWA - the Aquarium of Western Australia informs us that pec slapping, like breaching, is a method of communication. However, in this case, this is definitely the mother teaching her young calf how to pec slap and our lucky customers got to witness the lesson ☺️🐋💙🐋
