For more information & bookings please ring 1300865800 Geelong Gaol is one of Australia's most intact 19th Century convict prisons. A 3 story behemoth, it housed a host of convicts, murderers and lunatics under extreme conditions. Four men were executed and one buried within its walls. It is the site of scores of murders between prisoners. Begun in 1849, the prison was designed along the Pentonvil

le plan to contain convicts being brought directly from England before being shipped across the colony. Tiny cells, lack of toilets and facilities and freezing cold temperatures made Geelong Gaol a virtual dungeon till the day it closed. Prisoners were subjected to back-breaking labour, floggings and a system designed to completely break their spirits. Closing in the 1990's this is the one prison Chopper Reid said he never wanted to go back to.

Paranormal Invesgigation Saturday 21st of December 2024.
Thank you to the 9 brave investigators who joined me last night to explore the Old Geelong Gaol. We started our night in the surgery with a few ghost meter hits and a member of the tour feeling a little dizzy. We then moved to the kitchen, where we again had some ghost meter hits, and lots of noise were heard from the hospital above, it sounded like they were dragging the beds around. We made our way for the autopsy room, where we had K2 hits, lots of goosebumps, and a loud tapping sound. We then moved to the hospital and a lot of the group felt on edge as soon as we entered and we heard some loud tapping noises. We made our way up to cell 76 and had lots of K2 hits in response to questions. We finished our night in L.O.P (lose of privilege or solitary confinement) and we had big K2 spikes up to Red. Thank you again and hope to see you soon.

Local Melbourne band Choof spent an evening recently at the Old Geelong Gaol working on a film clip for their new song
‘Bird Cage & Forgotten/Despised’.

A classic Aussie crime drama gets absolutely riffed on - literally and figuratively - for this week’s video from Choof, ‘Bird Cage & Forgotten/Despised’.

End of the Rope: Shadows of Capital Punishment

This exhibition is a collaboration between the National Crime & Justice Museum—Geelong Gaol, Pentridge Voices, and Veronica and Chris Allen . Chris Allen created the photography installations with Veronica’s grandson, Rhys, who portrays Ronald Ryan.

Most people are familiar with images of Ryan being arrested or his mug shots. He was much more than that, and he was much more than the last man hanged in Australia on the 3 of February 1967. This interactive exhibition aims to showcase his life’s journey and provide educational opportunities.

The exhibition will feature a series of photographs that re-enact Ryan’s final moments and artefacts that have never been seen before. Visitors can also experience Dr Atalanti Dionysus’ virtual reality docudrama, ‘A Miscarriage of Justice’, which virtually takes spectators to the gallows to witness the ex*****on. Also displayed will be archival images and recorded testimonies from individuals present during the ex*****on, curated by Pentridge Voices.

On opening night, Veronica Allen, Ryan’s niece, will share her memories and experiences with her grandmother, Ryan’s mother, Cecilia, after his ex*****on. The exhibition runs from 1 January to 30 April 2025 at the National Crime & Justice Museum—Geelong Gaol.

Opening Night Saturday, 1 February 2025.

If you wish to attend, please contact the National Crime & Justice Museum at [email protected] or call 1300 865 800.

Geelong Gaol Ghost Tours

Nestled in the heart of Geelong is Victoria's most intact gaol 19th century gaol. For 138 years it was once home to the states most infamous and dangerous criminals, lunatics and children. Known to the prisoners themselves as the Prison of the Ill or the Seaside Resort, it was at one point an Industrial School for Girls.

But no matter how you arrived, it was a place many would try to escape from but many would never leave alive….

When darkness falls, join our costumed guide to be led by lantern light deep into the heart of Victoria's early colonial convict history as we explore the darkened halls and cells where convicts lived in extreme conditions, hearing stories of the prisoners, ex*****ons and of course, ghosts.

Or perhaps you are searching for the old age answer of whether ghosts really do exist? Join our investigators as we explore the hot spots using a range of paranormal equipment, trigger devices and experiments to see if you can find the evidence to prove that the paranormal truly does exist.
