Awoonga update below 👇👇👇
Spring is here, the days are warmer and the fishing in Awoonga has definitely started to improve. With many anglers willing to put in the time experiencing great sessions landing multiple meter plus fish per trip throughout September. As we moving further into spring, the warmer days have definitely got the Barra moving all over the lake. Although conditions on the lake haven’t always been smooth sailing, with 20 knot plus SE winds at different periods and holding well into the evening have made it rather difficult to move freely around the lake. But for anglers who have picked their times well around more favourable ENE breezes, or those who have managed to find zones offering a buffer of protection. Great catches have been available during both the low light evening periods (new moon) and high light evening periods (full moon), with patience and persistence often proving the strategic difference. The night sessions have definitely been the pick as the Barra have been actively feeding in the lowest light periods of a 24 hour day. Swimbaits presentations have been working well at night as per usual. Mixing up presentation size, colour and retrieval speeds till you find what’s working best at the time can prove the difference. But don’t forget all those hardbodies in your tackle box, they are definitely worth a cast while things are slow, or on fire for that matter.

During the day good numbers are continuing to gather around the main basin points and bigger w**d edges but have proven rather challenging to get the strike. But as is so often the case, persistence can make the difference and a hand full of quality fish have hit the deck while the sun is still high. Over nights are fairly cool and water temperatures are still in the low 20’s in the mornings. The shallow bays have also been holing plenty of fish during the warmest times of the day, so a few casts with a w**dless presentation or your choice is well worth a shot. Big fish love the warmer water and you would be surprised what’s up there!!!

Stop in and see the good people at the tackle shop and they will sort you out as always and have you equipped and ready to do battle. They are getting big!!!

As always before launching your boat for an evening hunting down Barra on the lake, be sure to check your lighting and safety gear as accidents at night can happen very easily and be considerate of others while fishing.

If your planning a trip, new to fishing, inexperienced with impoundment Barra or would like a few hours or sessions to get up to speed with what’s happening on the lake don’t forget to check out Charter options available. Can’t beat local knowledge. Contacts below 👇

Awoonga Update from Lake Awoonga Barra Charters

For many anglers that regularly fish lake Awoonga in the cooler winter months, targeting Barra can be a very challenging yet rewarding time of year. As fish tend to seek refuge from the cooling surface temperatures, gathering in the deeper areas of the lake while periodically visiting the shallow w**d bays at certain times of the day to soak up the warmth provided by the sun. Opportunities to target Barra in the open water as well as offering presentations in the shallowest of w**ds flats become available. Making for some exciting fishing for those able to put in the time and the casts.
Unfortunately, 2023 winter season has been far more challenging than rewarding. Although Barra have been caught at times throughout the cooler months and have been relatively easy to find, provoking a strike has been rather difficult.
Due to interruptions to regular stocking efforts, nearly all of the Barramundi in the lake are well over the 90cm class. And as one can only assume, with every minute, week, month and year each Barra manages to survive. Their experience, survival instincts and ability to avoid predators (anglers included) grows along with their length and weight. So with a slowed metabolism, lack of competition and there being no shortage of bait available to indulge, these larger class Barra have be rather difficult to fool into eating an artificial presentations.

The month of August started out following the previous winter months trends. With surface water temperatures still in the high teens and low 20’s. Though as we creep closer to September and the start of spring, the Barra have been creeping closer to the edges. Progressively throughout August healthy numbers have been sounded along basin w**d edges, points and deeper bays along with good numbers of fish moving on shallower w**d flats. Over winter a lot of w**d has reseeded slightly opening up areas once completely caked with w**d, allowing much more space for activities. The nights are starting to present opportunities now as the days and overnight air temperatures continue to rise. Reports of quality fish catches both in size and numbers are coming through right at the end of August and early September. It promises to be the start of a great spring and summer period for impoundment anglers so it won’t be long now before the lake will be illuminated with navigation lights once again. Be sure to check your boats lighting is in check and make sure your safety equipment is up to scratch. Water and night can be rather dangerous combination!!

For lures and techniques, go into see the good people in the tackle shop and they will be more than happy to get you geared up with what working. For the less experienced anglers or brand new to the impoundment Barra game, be sure to check out booking availabilities with the Charter services available. Every lake is different and local knowledge and experience an turn a tough trip into one you’ll never forget. Check out Lake Awoonga Barra Charters and Gladstone Fly and Sportfishing for a range of charter options.

Before conclusion, though the fishing in the lake this winter has been being extremely cold 🥶. The Gladstone Area Waterboard stocking program at the new state of the art aquaculture facility has been heating up 🔥🔥!!
The pros on the hill have been fine tuning the program and have really started to make things happen. For the 2022-2023 season, 867,334 barra were stocked at an average of 45mm. With fish being released all over the lake to assist in survival rates. The facility is now ramping up to achieve nameplate of 1.35 million fingerlings per season 😳😳!! Primary stocking is barramundi with smaller numbers of sea mullet and mangrove jacks also due to be released this year and early next. So the future for lake Awoonga has never been brighter!!

Keep an eye off for upcoming events including the public opening of the hatchery in October.
