I’m June a team from Newlife were blessed to travel all the way to Israel and Turkey on missions with .co. Some highlights were:

〰️ Visiting the school, an education hub for those in conflict zones
〰️ Walking through Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem
〰️ Immersing with the staff and children at an orphanage in Palestine
〰️ Seeing the Jordan where Jesus was baptized
〰️ Supporting the remarkable work by in honour of survivors of human trafficking
〰️ Visiting and serving refugees and those that were displaced from their homes in Turkey
〰️ Seeing the Via Dolorosa, the path Jesus took while carrying his cross to Calvary

It’s World Refugee Day today, so allow me to introduce to you just one of the many families that have courageously made their way to Australia’s shores and recently sat down with very own and champion of Waymakers, Ashley Hodges.

“I love to play soccer. I want to find a soccer team in Australia to play. My childhood dream was to be a professional soccer player.’’, said Ahmed as he reflected on what’s possible for him with his newly found freedom.

It’s been eight years since Ahmed, along with thousands of Ezidis, was forced to flee his home to escape the Islamic State genocide in northern Iraq. He still has no idea what was the fate of his parents yet he has chosen to focus on what’s before him - his new life with his baby brother and young family.

There are currently 25.4 million refugee waymakers worldwide. Men, women and children seeking a critical human right - freedom. Freedom to live without fear of war, persecution, to live in equality and have your basic human rights upheld.

I spent the day with Syrian refugees in Istanbul today… I have listened to the escape stories in the middle of the night… leaving behind everything and having to make these very choices was real for them and still real this very day.

We can change the world and we can make a difference in the lives of millions of displaced people around the world and the many brave families arriving in our own backyard. There are so many ways you can help.

Thanks for the reminder Alexa. It’s 7:11 and the random photo that appeared was the rooftop and view from our home in Iraq. Oh my.. we miss that place. After all these years, what once was a sadness and ache that we no longer get to wake up in this magical mountain community, has now turned into overwhelming gratitude for the incredible gift that we actually got to call Soran,“home”.

How wonderful is the experience of the feeling of great loss turning into a feeling of great gain!?
