☄️ C/2024 G3 ATLAS, more commonly known as Comet Atlas. This stunning comet has just completed its swing around the Sun and is now heading back out into the outer reaches of our Solar System. We have another chance to witness its beauty with the naked eye 👀 as it travels away from us!
Last night, Gold Coast Astronomy, along with many others, caught a glimpse of this cosmic wonder. If you want to see it for yourself, head outside between 7:20 PM and 8:20 PM (after sunset) and look to the west! 🌠
For the best viewing, find a spot with minimal (white) light pollution and a clear view of the western horizon. If the comet isn't immediately visible, look for Venus—the brightest "star" 🌟—setting in the west. Next, locate Fomalhaut, the next brightest star heading south of Venus, and then cast your gaze approximately 20° down towards the horizon 🌄. The comet is located about 10° above the horizon. To measure this, hold your arm out fully extended and use your closed fist✊🏽. The distance between the edges of your closed fist is approximately 10°. This technique is effective for everyone!
Happy comet hunting! ☄️
