🎉 It was an absolute whale party out there this morning!
We met up with our resident pod of inshore bottlenose dolphins just after we left the marina, then spotted our first whale blows on the horizon before we even left the Seaway!
The action didn’t stop, with 6+ pods around us at any one time, including relaxed & curious whales, competing whales, Mum’s & calves, breaching whales, more bottlenose dolphins & a huge pod of common dolphins 😱

😃 As we told our keen whale watchers when they boarded the boat this afternoon, it looks like it’s going to be a windy/wet one, but the good news is, that usually means active/breaching whales! 🐋
And… the whales delivered!
Within the first 5 minutes of being in the ocean, we were fortunate enough to be feasting our eyes on breaches, pec slaps, tail throws, spy hops and even one curious whale coming in for a closer look a few times.

🏝️ One of the Gold Coast’s most natural oceanside locations is South Stradbroke Island, which begins at our ocean entrance, the Gold Coast Seaway, and runs 21km north to the Jumpinpin Bar 🌊
We often find ourselves travelling north and along South Straddie with the whales while they’re on the first half of their migration 🐳🐳. The island provides a more natural backdrop compared to the stark contrast of a whale in front of the ever growing city skyline 🌆. Both backdrops are amazing, and both so important to our Gold Coast.

It's time for the annual whale migration up the East Coast of Queensland. For their safety and yours, we need to share the water safely with marine life. To reduce the risk of disturbing whales, be mindful of the approach distances and rules below ⬇️
⚠️ Caution zones
The caution zone is an area extending 300m from a whale in which boats cannot travel at speeds greater than 6 knots.
⛔ No approach zones
Within a caution zone there are areas designated as ‘no approach’ zones that boats cannot enter. These are the areas closest to an animal and directly in front of and behind an animal. The no approach zone is 100m to the sides of the whale, and 300m in front and behind of it's direction of travel.
🛥️ The ‘3-boat rule’
A boat cannot enter a caution zone if three boats are already present. If there's a queue to enter the caution zone, boats inside should share the water and move on after a fair time to allow others a chance to see the whales.

🐬 One of our favourite “additional extras” to whale season are the jokers of the sea, the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis). These dolphins can be seen any month if the year, but sightings are much more regular from June - October. They often found socialising and feeding in very large pods, and are the most acrobatic of the dolphins we encounter off the Gold Coast. A beautiful “Shy Albatross” about 2.5nm off Main Beach today for the passengers on a fishing charter with our sister business, @bksgoldcoastfishingcharters, today 🦅 This amazing pelagic seabird is the only albatross endemic to Australia, breeding on 3 islands off Tasmania between September to December, so it seems this one has a fair way to travel back down south!
