“Dawn Patrol,” day 34 of “75 Days of Art” / The sun never fully rose above the horizon during SeaLegacy's two-week expedition to the fjords of Northern Norway. Despite the moody light, I managed to capture this massive male orca exploding through the surface and surging through the inky waters, his dorsal rising like a black sail. A perfect picture of power and grace, orcas are by far one of the most impressive apex predators on the planet. The content we captured of this pod played a key role in keeping oil drilling out of the pristine Arctic ecosystem and ensured the future of Norway’s orca families.

Fantastic News!!!

We did it! 💪 Thanks to your support, the federal government just declared the two new marine protected areas around Christmas Islands and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. 👉 And they’re huge! Bigger than the Barrier Reef! 💙 This is an historic win for our oceans and internationally significant – you helped make this a reality.

The best part is that The Christmas Islands and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Parks are co-designed by the local island communities that rely on healthy oceans for their culture, lifestyles and livelihoods. They’ve worked hard to make sure these parks meet their aspirations, and the result is amazing

Not only are they huge, but about 99% of the parks are highly protected sanctuary areas – around 739,000 square kilometres, an area bigger than Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT combined. Together these form some of the largest marine sanctuary areas in the world!

You can be proud of this achievement – it was the 1000s of emails and submissions of support from ocean lovers like you that helped make these parks a reality. The next step will be to make sure we get a strong management plan for these marine parks, but the hard part is done.

Thank you - our supporters - once again for making this a reality!

Researchers are watching to see if a pod of beluga whales that took in a stray narwhal could one day produce a baby “narluga” — a cross between the two species.
