An extraordinary workshop in Melbourne with Australian contemporary landscape artist Tim Allen! It’s an incredibly powerful experience to create your own unique interpretations of the landscape.

Tim only teaches a couple of times a year as he has a full workload as an artist. We can’t wait to see what Tim’s group creates over a week in the Tasmanian landscape next year! It’s sold out, so if you missed this one keep an eye out for 2026 or our other upcoming workshops with Australian artists.

I spent a couple of days experimenting with a new paper - Conson Mi Tientes Velvet - and loved the results. It holds the pastel very well and there is very little drift. It also takes multiple layers.

I'm rather enamoured with this new product and see all sorts of possibilities!

MELBOURNE WORKSHOP CONFIRMED! Youve been asking and were listening as always. I have just confirmed 2 new face to face events for next year with Artable Studio. For Novembers wonderful 3 day workshop, were exploring a fantastic subject of the OWL in watercolour. What a gorgeous subject this is too, so full of intensity, contrasting softness and remarkable texture. A challenge? Yes it is, but its a wonderful one, and I am going to walk you through the process every step of the way, to show you how it can be done. Whether youre a seasoned artist wanting to refine your work or a keen beginner, theres plenty to learn and enjoy in this focus. I look forward to seeing you there!

Canberra has stepped up to the plate to finally give us a plein air event on the east coast! A couple of familiar faces are behind this April event. We are thrilled to support this one and I’ll be there in person as well.

Make sure you jump on their list to get updates and let’s all get behind this important event. Our Australian artists need these events to be able to compete on the international stage and our community need need to be able to fatter as often as possible!

A night of pizza and laughs to finish off our week with Colley Whisson in Tasmania..

Colley tells us this is some of the best landscape subject matter in Australia and we agree!

We chased down farm culture this week with access to some local farms to get the best inspiration. We are so grateful to our amazing local community in Winnaleah for supporting our artists.

This group worked heavily in studio under Colley’s guidance with field trips for grabbing photo references and a couple of plein air days. They were prolific - each artist producing 5-8 paintings in their time here.

If you are serious about getting better at oil painting then is a must. We watched each and every student fly and one student sold her artwork to a local at the end of the week 😍

Tasmania ticks all the boxes, perfect cool but not cold weather, no flies, epic landscapes and the support of a little country town and community. It’s on again same time next year - join us!

A brief snippet of some of the extraordinary artwork coming out of Colley Whisson’s Tasmanian retreat.

Each artist curates their itinerary to what is best fit their style and students. This group have had heavy studio time alongside periods of plein air. We dropped in a couple of nature walks to clear the head and break up the week and a fun pub night and coffee stop.

It’s amazing what you can achieve when you have uninterrupted painting time with a master artist and all of your meals taken care of.

Our groups eat VERY well!

An afternoon of gorgeous golden light as we went on a photo taking adventure with Colley Whisson in the Tasmanian countryside. No shortage of subject matter here! Everyone got loads of their own reference pictures for future paintings.

It was brilliant hearing from one of Australia’s best impressionist oil painters what he looks for in his subject matter and watch just how many pictures he will take to find that magical winning combination.

Some very lucky students now have loads of references for future artworks in the months after they go home after the retreat.

The travel journals on retreat with @diefenbachlyn are fast becoming popular with students! When we do our day trips to beautiful places on retreat, students can choose to sit and do their travel journals or tackle more complex plein air pastel paintings. You can take just a few minutes to capture something on location to finish later or you can spend hours waiting at an airport colouring in. Lyn finished her plein air pastel work and sat down to do a quick sketch at Tasmania’s Bay of Fires and throw some colour on which could then be finished in the comfort of the studio or lounge in the quiet moments on holiday. Our Story

If you are the kind of person that has always wanted to have a go at art, but feel a bit nervous about starting, then you have found the right page.

Artable believes that EVERYONE can learn how to paint and draw with the right teaching and the right tools and we have hundreds of people over many years who are now proof that this is actually true :)

Our focus is on providing weekend workshops and art retreats around Australia and overseas that show you the ‘how to’ in a relaxing environment.

In 2017 we launched the largest gathering of artists our region had ever seen gathering 100 students and 8 teachers together for our annual art retreat. It was a highlight for us - affordable and accessible.
