David shares an on-the-job video from this morning at the bridge of Sea Breeze III, leaving the Viaduct Marina and headed for Gulf Harbour.

Getting 105 feet out of the berth and through the marina is a small challenge, even on a calm day.

Anchoring inside a reef at night, in the middle of the ocean is a strange experience the first time you do it. North Minerva Reef has become a favourite stopover on the way from Opua to Fiji over the past 3 years.

At 3.5nm in diameter and 5 - 25 metres deep inside, its a stunning spot for snorkelling, swimming, and exploring the reef at low tide. The most surreal experience you will have is going ashore at low tide, after dark and gathering crayfish. You have a small window of time before the incoming tide starts to cover the reef again and its crazy to be standing ankle deep in water, in the dark with the ocean on the other side.

We are usually 0.5nm from the anchored yacht at that point and leaving torch lights on in the anchored RIB so you can find it again is vital to making it safely back.

There are 2 crew spots left on our next passage from Opua to Tonga via North Minerva in early April 2025: https://oceansailingexpeditions.com/opua-to-kermadecs-to-tonga-2025

And crew positions still available on the passage from Opua to Fiji via North Minerva in late April 2025:

It’s a rare achievement to sail through the Kermadec Group of Islands. At 500nm NE of Opua and spread over 80nm, they are all uniquely different and hard to get to.

From the steaming live crater of the Curtis Island undersea volcano, that you peer into, as you sail past, to the green grassy, dome shape of Macauley Island and the azure blue crater lake at Raoul Island, thats 1.2 km in diameter, this family of islands could not be more different.

We’ve sailed through them twice, in the past three years and we are headed there again on our passage from Opua to Fiji on 30 April this year:

New podcast episode: Sharon Ferris-Choat: Sydney Hobart Race 2024 Debrief ⛵️

This the remarkable story of Sharon’s leadership and seamanship, to pull a rookie crew together for the first time, 3 weeks earlier and to deliver them safely from Sydney to Hobart, despite hitting speeds of 24 knots plus at times, on a boat they were still learning to sail.
