πŸ“ Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

The largest tidewater glacier on the North American content at over 3350 meters above sea level, the glacier stretches 122km from its source in the Yukon.

Hubbard Glacier has been thickening and advancing towards the golf of Alaska since it was first mapped by the International boundary commission in 1895.

This is in start contrast with most glaciers which have thinned and retreated during the last century.

We were lucky enough to see the carving of the glacier whilst scenic cruising here - such an incredible experience.

Today we disembarked the Celebrity Solstice in our first Alaskan port - Icy Strait Point.

Icy Strait Point, located on Chichagof Island, is home to the largest population of bears 🐻 in the world 🌎
The bear to human ratio is 5-1.
We had an incredible time with local guides from β€˜Wilderness Island Tours’ - we were lucky enough to see 7 bears today!

So amazing to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat 🌲 🌲

On to Whistler (via Sun Peaks and Revelstoke) and again, in love with this place!

The Village is nestled at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains and its pedestrian only cobblestone walkways make for a real Swiss village feel.

Our next adventure was a day trip up the Icefields Parkway as far as the Athabasca Glacier.

Just as the name implies, these glaciers or β€œfields of ice” straddle Banff National Park and Jasper National Park and are the largest south of the Arctic Circle. They are 325km2 in area and 100 to 365 metres in depth and receive up to seven metres of snowfall per year.

We were originally going to do this on our way through to Jasper, but due to the wildfires we sadly had to re-route our trip and skip Jasper all together 😒 however being able to travel this highway πŸ›£οΈ up and back was a treat as the drive is incredibly scenic 😍 and there are plenty of beautiful photo opportunities along the way πŸ“Έ

We took a Glacier Tour to 13,000 year old Athabasca Glacier, aboard a 6x6 Ice Explorer.
Sadly it is melting and has receded more than 1.5 km and lost over half of its volume in the past 125 years.

After the Glacier tour we headed to the Icefield skywalk which had incredible views from the glass-floored observation platform 280 metres over the Sunwapta Valley.

On our way back to Emerald Lake Lodge, we stopped off at Peyto Lake, a glacier fed lake and one of the most photographed Lakes in the Rockies.. and you can see why - absolutely breathtaking!

Our next stop was on to Emerald Lake Lodge where we based ourselves for the next 2 nights via the Bow Valley Parkway πŸš™

We stopped off at Johnston Canyon en route and did a 3km trek πŸ‘Ÿ along a lovely winding path, through the lush forest 🌲 alongside Johnston creek river which lead us to the Lower Falls.

From Emerald Lake we also explored Lake Louise by taking the gondola to the summit and also taking the Canada Parks shuttle into the lake itself which was more breathtaking than I imagined.

There is just so much beauty in this area of the Rockies ❀️

I have had the most wonderful time visiting Banff for the first time with my family.

We were treated to snowfall ❄️(yes, in summer) on our first day at the top of Sulphur Mountain Gondola which was so magical, followed by the most magnificent sunshine β˜€οΈ whilst cruising on the stunning Lake Minnewanka (2nd longest lake in the Canadian Rockies) and Bow Falls on the following day.

This Swiss style resort town located inside Banff National Park in the heart of the Rocky Mountains πŸ”οΈ

Banff Avenue (the main thoroughfare) features boutiques and restaurants with a mix with chÒteau-style hotels and souvenir shops - including THE most amazing Christmas shop and a BeaverTail (Canadian pastry) store 🀀

The towering Cascade mountain makes for the perfect backdrop for what has become one of my favourite destinations I have ever been to.

Surrounding Banff is 6,500 square kilometres of incredible parkland 🌲 and home to wildlife including elk and grizzly bears.. sadly no sighting of either but did come across some squirrels 🐿️

We spent 3 nights but could have spent much longer here.

Bye for now Banff, I will be back! πŸ‘‹ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
