Cricket Walkabout details the extraordinary story of the Indigenous players - among them the legendary Unaarrimin (Johnny Mullagh) - who in 1868 became the first Australian cricketers to tour England.

This is the fourth edition of Cricket Walkabout to be published. The first edition was published in 1967, with subsequent editions released in 1988 and 2005.

This latest edition features the meticulous research and engaging writing of the original co-authors, the late John Mulvaney and the late Rex Harcourt. The new edition also features a range of new material, including a foreword by Australian Test cricketer Scott Boland.

Today marks the 133rd anniversary of the passing of Unaarrimin-Johnny Mullagh. Thirty three years ago, Rex Harcourt (co author of Cricket Walkabout) and Lachie Turner organised a ceremony at his graveside to mark the 100th anniversary of JMs death. This year, Rex’s daughters, Susan (left) and Jane Harcourt with Lachie Turner, laid a wreath of wattle on his grave to honour the life of Unaarrimin, but also their dear father who did so much throughout his academic life to bring attention and respect to this story.

The Cricketana Festival was a huge success with these enthusiastic cricket "brainiacs" surprised and hugely impressed by the quality of our collection, which they generously added to!

The 2024 WISDEN has arrived and has joined our collection, thanks to the generosity of Andrew Farran. Yanggendyinanyuk-Dick-a-Dick gets a mention on page 88-89, but I think a letter to the editor is in order, don’t you think?

It was a hot weekend for the Johnny Mullagh Cup but our cricketers persevered in the heat with the Glenelg XI triumphant again. Seems excessive heat affecting the attendance of games and/or events is not a new thing as reported here in the Staffordshire Advertiser - Saturday 12 September 1868, when the First XI played the Burton Cricket Club. Bet it wasn't 41 degrees!

ON THIS DAY February 8, 1868.
ALL ABOARD!
The First Eleven sailed from Sydney to London aboard the wool clipper The Parramatta. Their Captain, Charles Lawrence, arranged lodgings in a large cabin between first and second class for the 3 month voyage. When some players became terrified by the wild seas, Lawrence comforted them with
Christian stories and led them in
evening prayers- a foretaste of
mission life in Australia, to which
some of them returned.
They arrived in England on the 13th of May 1868.

Some other things that happened
on 8th February in time.

* 1587 Mary, Queen of Scots, is
beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle
aged 44 after being convicted of
plotting to assassinate Elizabeth I in
the Babington Plot

*1672 Isaac Newton reads 1st optics
paper before Royal Society in
London

*1994: A record-breaking day for
Kapil Dev in a test against Sri Laka
in Ahmedabad when he dismissed
Hashan Tillakaratne, caught by
Sanjay Manjrekar. This was Kapil’s
432nd test wicket, and he went past
Richard Hadlee’s record to become
the highest wicket-taker in tests.
India won that game by an innings
and 17 runs, which was India’s ninth
consecutive win at home. His feat

was saluted with 432 balloons, and
everyone gave him a one-minute
standing ovation

Some other things that also
happened in 1868:-

*Christopher Latham Sholes
received a patent for an invention
he called the "Type-Writer."

*New Zealand officially adopts a
standard time to be observed
nationally.

*The first traffic lights are installed,
outside the Palace of Westminster
in London. Resembling railway
signals, they use Railway
semaphore signal named
semaphore arms and are
illuminated at night by red and
green gas lamps.
