Australian crossbench MPs have joined calls for a permanent residency pathway for 8,500 asylum seekers living with visa uncertainty, with limited rights to work, study and access welfare.
The open letter follows the death of 23-year-old Mano Yogalingam, who arrived in Melbourne in 2012, but who last week set himself on fire after campaigning for change.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that any su***de is a tragedy, and that "my heart goes out to this person's family."
