Yarra Valley Railway - Yarra Gums
With the 23rd of March being National Eucalypt Day, the Yarra Valley Railway is excited to share some recent developments.
We recently identified along our rail corridor, where weβre working to reconstruct the line to Yarra Glen, some healthy mature Yarra Gums (Eucalyptus yarraensis). This critically endangered species of Eucalypt is among the rarest of the species. Endemic to moist areas in central Victoria, particularly within proximity of its namesake the Yarra River, the Yarra Gum has long found itself victim to widespread clearing as its favoured habitat has long proved productive for agriculture. The tree itself is very similar to more common swamp gums which often sees Yarra Gums misidentified.
Yarra Gum trees are classified as critically endangered, which is just below extinct in the wild on the classification scale. These examples of Yarra Gums discovered along the Healesville to Yarra Glen rail corridor is an exciting development. Working with Yarra Ranges Council, tree protection zones have been established around the Yarra Gum trees and a Swamp Gum, to keep these gorgeous trees safe.
It is an honour for the Yarra Valley Railway, a volunteer organisation, to be a custodian and part of the effort to save these rare Yarra Gum trees that are on the verge of extinction.
