Please show your support for our farmers and family-run Hill Street Grocer stores, by purchasing salmon in store today.

Activists are targeting the stores and salmon jobs today, in an attempt to pressure the local retailer to stop selling Tasmanian salmon.

The salmon industry supports more than 5000 jobs across Tasmania and supports access to healthy, locally produced food.

As the industry has acknowledged, elevated mortality is currently impacting both salmon farmers in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

This is an extremely challenging time for the Huon team and wider industry, and we know it has been concerning for the community.

Our industry is required to report elevated mortality to regulators and we have been in constant contact with authorities.

Our farmers and scientists are the best in the world at what they do and are doing everything they can to manage these difficult circumstances as quickly and professionally as possible.

Huon advised last week it had commenced antibiotic treatment for some fish at its Zuidpool lease. We made it a priority to inform the community as soon as we could.

When we were advised of the situation at Verona Sands last Sunday, Huon responded immediately to clear the material found, and has been monitoring the beach and surrounding shorelines, daily.

In collaboration with Tassal - Our Community, we are scaling up this activity, following reports of fish washing ashore.

Preliminary testing confirmed the oily substance at Verona Sands is fish oil and not harmful to humans or pets. It is not possible to pin point the source. The EPA did, however, confirm yesterday it did not contain antibiotics.

We also do not believe fish frames that washed ashore yesterday are from the small number of pens currently being treated with antibiotics.

What’s wrong with the fish?
Many salmon in southern Tasmania are struggling with a bacteria called RLO.
RLO stands for Rickettsia-like organisms, which are a bacteria that occur naturally in the local environment. RLO does not impact humans or other animals, and isn’t known to impact wild fish; but can be harmful to salmon.

A new vaccine was developed locally last year for the strain of RLO that is currently impacting salmon in the south east, which will greatly benefit future fish stocks.

Warm summer water temperatures have also exacerbated the current situation.

Salmon is safe to eat, as is wild caught fish.

What’s happening with the mortalities?
Huon has extremely robust processes in place to manage mortalities.

This includes ensiling, which is used for fertiliser on agricultural land.

Sending mortalities to landfill is a last resort in the waste hierarchy, but it is sometimes necessary when other forms of disposal are unavailable. It is our understanding that mortalities from multiple operators are currently going to landfill.

Huon works with waste management organisations to ensure these isolated disposal events are managed in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, in full compliance with license conditions that are issued and regulated by the EPA.

Please report any concerns to [email protected] and please be kind to team members on beaches this weekend.

Dear Verona Sands Residents,

Thank you for getting in touch with our team over the weekend.

We at Huon responded quickly to queries at Verona Sands beach.

We can confirm that it was not fish feed that washed up on the shoreline, but we are taking the matter extremely seriously and have sent samples for testing.

A crew of more than 20 team members cleared the shore yesterday afternoon and another crew returned at first light this morning to monitor conditions.

We can confirm that no further materials have washed ashore overnight.

7:29PM A further update:

Samples collected from the beach have been sent for testing; however, it is believed to likely be fish oil. Fish oil is not harmful to people or pets.

Our team at Huon has been regularly communicating with the EPA and members of the Verona Sands community.

We will continue to monitor the beach daily for the remainder of the week, as well as other nearby beaches.

To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in STEM we wanted to celebrate our own Caitlin Ringuet.

Since graduating from James Cook University with a science degree majoring in aquaculture, Caitlin joined our team as a Planning Officer and since then has progressed onto her current role as Planning Manager. With the input of her equally impressive team, Caitlin supports the sustainability of our business through the delivery of long-term biological and operational forecasting.

When asked about her advice for other women and girls in STEM Caitlin said, ‘I'm excited about where aquaculture is in particular and I love seeing the women coming through and being supported, engaged and heard. My advice is to always be curious, always be learning, and don't feel like you have to hold yourself back.'

Today and everyday we celebrate the women of Huon.
