The Tree Projects use innovative film and photography methods to raise awareness about the world's significant trees and the forests in which they reside. We bring you beautiful imagery of the trees from a unique perspective, which allows people to experience a rainforest from above the forest floor. The signature element of our project is a 'tree portrait' of a significant tree. When large forest

trees are viewed from the ground, it is often impossible to get a true sense of the size of the tree, as the top of the tree is often obscured from view. We install a specialised camera rigging system which runs the entire vertical length of the tree and takes a photo every metre. These photos are then stitched together to create a portrait of the tree from a level viewpoint without visual distortion. The projects also contain many other innovative content such as virtual reality tours of the canopy, aerial photography and timelaspe and hyperlapse video. Our content is designed for educational purposes and is used for museum exhibition and for magazine articles. We hope to educate people about the importance of forests but allowing them to view trees from a new perspective. Projects:

RUBICON 82.26m NSW’s TALLEST & BIGGEST TREE. Smashing the record by 11m! As soon as we saw this tree all 9 of us knew we had some work to do! This was an unbelievable mission into wild forests, we spent two very busy days documenting this patch.

We measured the height using laser and tape drop plus the volume for this tree via tape wraps. Well all knew it was going to be massive but smashing the height record, set just the weekend before, by 11m was just showing off.

We have uploaded a 15min process video to YouTube and we’ll upload a short here on insta tomorrow.

This project took a big team to find, plan, descend 300m off the plateau and hike equipment 6km into this patch.

CLASSIC 3 PERSON FLAKE You know how the week b4 last we measured NSWs tallest tree? How would you feel if we already demolished that record… by a lot, like heaps, not even a close contest anymore.

Big Spotty’s time on top was probably the shortest lived record tree title ever. Soz Biggie Spots, you’re still the prettiest tho.

Tape drop news drop Mundy 🤓

Here Tom Greenwood, and Jonas Bellchambers are so pumped on the mish that they all just have to do a one person job. (I’m just sour there was no flake train space left)

NSW TALLEST TREE & it’s in a logging coupe. W .

Over the last 5 weeks we’ve been climbing and measuring NSW tallest known trees. To our surprise, didn’t realise until 10 mins after measure was in, Big Spotty has come out on top!

🥇Big Spotty 70.93
🥈The Grandis 70.25
🥉Woodford 69.52

Measured from tip to midpoint of ground using a 90m tape measure & LiDAR

We climbed and measured Big Spotty on Saturday to help out the Save Big Spotty pozzible campaign. MATE donate to help them do the good work!! (Link in bio). The film crew was there to capture the proceedings from top to bottom. This was the first shoot for the film that they are raising money for and there’s so much support for this so get on board! (Link in bio)

More about the precise measurements and methodology a bit later but this is BIG NEWS and it a bit s**t that NSW tallest know tree is in a logging coupe with just a 60m buffer.

WHAT A WEEKEND OF BIG TREE FUN

AURORA CLIMB. Nice splash of colour from the tree top last night. I think we’ll have to find a tree with a better aspect and darker sky. Bit not bad for a first attempt.

Took the images hand held at 1/10 shutter, f/1.8 & 102000 ISO. The mish was a bit last minute and I ust trying to see if it would all work so would mount the camera next time for sure to bring that ISO down.

Been a while since I climbed at night and with a half moon it was bright enough to not have the torches on most of the time.

COOLOOLA BIOBLITZ, Spent Saturday w Sam Mitchell from National Register of Big Trees sharing his knowledge with groups of keen beans. We explored the forests around Rainbow Beach, north of Brisbane looking for prime specimens growing in sandy soils.

Coming from Tassie it’s always very refreshing to wander into forests with so much species diversity and witness the novel adaptations to local conditions.

Sam is absolute legend, it was a sight to behold seeing him wander and share his experience and knowledge with such enthusiasm. 👀.

This is the last big event for this trip. The return to Tasmania is coming up quick so we’ll be soaking up the last of the northern winter warmth ready to get into Tassie’s spring weather.

10 METERS DEEP. Into the tube with & was an experience. This individual tree had no telltale signs from the ground that such a cavity existed. There was a branch failure for sure but that’s pretty common on trees of the size and age. It wasn’t until we ascended up and got face to face with the cavity that its size became apparent.

Traveling around the east coast of Australia has been such a pleasure both in taking the time to finally see some epic trees and the epic people. More adventures to come!

Retrieval delights at the end of an epic day of climbing & measuring in the Blue Mtns. Nothing like the last gear retrieval at the end of a long day just perfectly wrapping itself on a tiny stub. Not a drama to climb back up on the access line tho.

Which tree is actually the tallest in NSW? That’s the question we’re answering by validating several laser rangefinder measurements from several people. This range of measurements have two tree duelling it out. Yesterday we climbed with & friends to drop a single 90m measuring tape from the tippy top to the mid point of ground. We also scanned the base using photogrammetry so we can revisit it with pixel perfect accuracy.

Won’t be able to post the data about this until we visit the second tree. We sourced a LiDAR scan of that tree by .au so no need to climb it (🫤).

ONE YEAR SINCE GROVE OF GIANTS PROTECTED. Today is a wonderful anniversary. It's been a whole year since we managed to get the Grove removed from the logging schedule.

Since then, thanks to our lobbying to get changes made to the Giant Tree Policy, the Grove is now an informal reserve. We are still working away behind the scenes to try and achieve formal protection for the Grove.

Tasmania doesn't get a lot of success stories for its forests, but we are proud to have achieved protection for this incredible patch of forest.

We would love to thank the dozens of people who have actively helped out on this campaign, the hundreds of people have come out and visited the forest, and the thousands of people across the country who have spoken up about this incredible place. It really has been a true grassroots effort.

THANK YOU!!!

Ghana climb crew getting out for their first unsupervised climb. It’s a years long process to go from training to published canopy science thesis, it just can’t be rushed. But there are achievements along the way that are to be celebrated.

This demonstration of the team coming together to maintain an observant and safe worksite is that first step. Best practice is one of the elements that we established right from the start. So very proud of them for taking the personal time to nurture their skills and confidence at height.

Hydrogen and E-fuels: the right choice for Tasmania?

Green hydrogen and e-fuels are being pitched as a renewable energy solution and Australia’s next big export industry. But is green hydrogen the answer for reducing our emissions?

Two green hydrogen and e-fuel projects are being proposed in northern Tasmania, However, they are not as green as they seem. Forest biomass is needed to turn hydrogen into e-fuels, and both facilities claim they will use waste from plantations. However, there is only enough waste materials from plantation to meet 50% of these facilities needs.

There is simply not enough sustainable sources of biomass to feed these facilities, which will place a lot of pressure on our native forests, and may mean the continuation of logging for decades to come.

The two proposed facilities will also require 260 new wind turbines to power them, and will use 9,000 million litres of fresh water each year, which is equivalent to the annual water usage of 11,500 Tasmanian homes.

You can visit our website for more information and to download the full report.

🇬🇭 Prince Yeboah Baah, “This tree climbing skill is a life and time saver”. My interest in plant Taxonomy requires tree climbing skills for sample collections of both fertile and sterile materials for herbarium records. The climbing skill is needed to get leaves from tall trees for identification and in some cases where fruits or flowers may never have been collected, the climbing skill will come in very handy to make collections.

Also another project in Plant Phenology monitoring. Climbing skill is needed to mount cameras on tall trees to monitor the phenology of the forest canopy. My current research, Vertical, temporal and partial dimensions of insect composition in naturally occurring deadwood will employ climbing skills. The focus is on the insect species that occur from the base of a tree to the canopy. Tree climbing is crucial for me to reach the canopy for insect collection. This new skill is a life and time saver as it will make my sample collection easy to carry out.

NEW REPORT LAUNCHED: Hydrogen and E-fuels: the right choice for Tasmania?

Two e-fuel projects are being proposed in northern Tasmania. These facilities will make green hydrogen from renewable energy and then create e-fuel by adding forest biomass. But these two projects may not be as green as they seem.

What does this have to do with forests?

Forest biomass is needed to turn hydrogen into e-fuels, and both of the proposed projects claim they will use waste from plantations. However, there is only enough waste materials from plantations to meet 50% of these facilities' needs.

What does this mean for native forests?

There are simply not enough sustainable sources of biomass to feed these facilities. We concerned that the additional biomass will come from native forests, where government subsidies already create a cheap supply of low-quality woodchips.

What does this mean for the climate?

We need to take urgent action on climate change. While green hydrogen could have a limited role in reducing our emissions, we need to make sure that an e-fuel industry does not expand native forest logging. A huge amount of emissions come from native forest logging. The best climate solution is that our forests are protected.

What other issues are there?

These two facilities will use a lot of energy. Over 50% of the energy is lost in the process of converting renewable energy to e-fuels. Around 260 new wind turbines will be needed to power these plants.

We are 100% supportive of wind farms and renewable energy, however all developments do have some impact on the environment. We are much better off using our renewable energy to power local industries in Tasmania, rather than wasting it in inefficient processes to create e-fuels and sending it off overseas.

This comparison adds some perspective on why this project has value. Make no mistake we went to Ghana to follow our love for trees and adventure. This simple comparison puts it all into perspective.

It was super sick fun to organise and deliver this training and equipment to researchers in Ghana. But yep there’s a bit of a big picture goal here too.

ONE PERSON HELD IT HELD IT ALL TOGETHER, Bismark it wouldn’t have happed without you!

Bismark is a Lecturer in Ecology & researching plant phenology, plant functional traits, community ecology. We first met in China at the Canopy Conference that was held in October last year. Over the months since then Bismark took care of all the in country everythings, permission, permits and participants. Effectively we just showed up and did our thing.

I need tree climbing skills for plant phenology and plant animal interaction studies using camera traps. Also, to collect sun exposed leaves for plant functional trait studies, I will need climbing skills, especially making collections at branch tips.

I am excited about the world of opportunity in canopy ecology/canopy science research that our students would now have access to. On all grounds and at all levels, such a training would not have been possible without the generosity of equipment donors and course facilitators.

THIS IS ACTUALLY A DREAM TURNED INTO REALITY. .owusu_708 As a young scientist, I have always had the desire to monitor species in mangroves and tropical rainforests. Tree canopies have not been investigated much in our part of the world and with this training, I believe I can bridge the gap and make an impact on climate change, conservation and biodiversity.

Currently in my Mphil thesis, I plan on studying leaf herbivory in two forests in Ghana. This Canopy Access has come at the very best time, because I was always wondering how to get access to the canopies for this research. I nearly abandoned the topic, but this tree climb training has given me the requisite knowledge, skills and understanding required to carry-out research in canopies. I will also use this skill set to mount camera traps, take samples from canopies and make other observations in the near future.

GHANA 🇬🇭 Day 1 a massive day. Knots, Visual Tree Inspection & YEAY first climb. We came in with all the hustle after loosing our Sunday afternoon gear preparation time. Both of my checked bags with a small fortune of donated equipment didn’t make the transfer in Dubai. They arrived in Accra at 12 the next day so we ended up rolling into Sunyani until 8pm wasted from the drive and jet lag.

So we hustled like crazy on Monday morning to scope out a spot to climb on campus, check the gear was all there and get right into the classroom. Going through the top order of risk management and so much more of the big picture of tree climbing. Visual tree assessments were our first outing to look at trees on the campus, the level of attentiveness from the students was really obvious to all of us.

After lunch we geared up and got into some trees using the Teufelberger TreeMotion Essential Harnesses, CEclimb and HipStar Flex lanyard systems. I’m sure all us climbers remember the dramas and inefficiencies or that first climb but also that first moment of being at height in a tree seeing it all for the first time.

I’m going to try run a day by day rundown but will post sort bios of the researchers in our stories and in a post.

The thetreeprojects.com website has a page with all the info go take a look.

We are still raising money to help cover costs, please help if you have capacity to do so.

Links to both are in our bio.

More seed collecting at .quoin w . A rope tarp never seemed necessary but hitting 12 trees in a day and just picking up the tarp to transport lines between them was super convenient. It’s not a game changer but it is easier than flaking the rope every time, the tarp bundle was also able to be stuffed into the backpack as well no problem.

It was a pleasure to climb these old remnant trees and discover the infinite ways that life, weather and decay can shape the same species of tree just 50m apart into some completely different to the next. You’ve really got to appreciate the hectic and sometimes bizarre structure that these old eucalyptus can take. Just magnificent.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY. Get out there and engage with outside. Dr Jen, myself and our mates have been lucky to have spent a large percentage of our time outside doing what we can for Lutruwita Tasmania. We hope that we’ve brought you along on that journey either here on the socials or better yet come with us out into the bush.

We can all do something for a better home but a key part of knowing, understanding and acting is a personal knowledge and experience of these places that are under threat.

So get out there, shake off all the have too’s and understand that being outside is something that has the power to inspire in so many ways. You might even find yourself measuring thousands of potholes on a Monday, because that’s a normal thing to do 🫠.
