The Tree Projects use innovative film and photography methods to raise awareness about the world's significant trees and the forests in which they reside. We bring you beautiful imagery of the trees from a unique perspective, which allows people to experience a rainforest from above the forest floor. The signature element of our project is a 'tree portrait' of a significant tree. When large forest

trees are viewed from the ground, it is often impossible to get a true sense of the size of the tree, as the top of the tree is often obscured from view. We install a specialised camera rigging system which runs the entire vertical length of the tree and takes a photo every metre. These photos are then stitched together to create a portrait of the tree from a level viewpoint without visual distortion. The projects also contain many other innovative content such as virtual reality tours of the canopy, aerial photography and timelaspe and hyperlapse video. Our content is designed for educational purposes and is used for museum exhibition and for magazine articles. We hope to educate people about the importance of forests but allowing them to view trees from a new perspective. Projects:

Very lucky to have some post project time to slow down and visit some old growth. After 10 hectic crazy days of filming it’s both sad and exciting to say goodbye to the crew and venture out on our own.

Here we are visiting the Eden Grove out of Port Renfrew which is yet to be fully protected.

Was full send every second available to get this over the line in the time allowed. The camera setup spanned a void of 160m between the tree and the hillside. Then had to precisely lower the camera trolly down into the one and only gap in the regrowth where operating the camera system was possible.

Also very lucky to have set our alarms incorrectly for the daylight savings time change so we all woke up an hour earlier than expected 🥸.

So shattered for the tree and the forest that it was. Big Lonely Doug is such a beautiful and structurally charismatic tree it’s impossible not to be impressed. But the feeling of sadness that soon follows that appreciation is equally real.

MOSTEST EXCELLENT MISH 2.5 days to climb, rigged & shoot the Castle Giant w & Casing Giants doc crew.

Our last tree portrait in Tassie took 8 months, the time budget for this one was 2.5 days. But we pulled it off with an amazing crew of 12 people all taking charge of aspects of such a logistical and time por challenge.

Today is to recover because tomorrow we head to Big Lonely Doug to do it all again.

BIG BAGS, BIG CREW, BIG TREES We’ve just landed in Vancouver and heading to the Island tomorrow for big tree goodness. We’ll be here for two weeks exploring the priomo forests and photographing two giant trees. We’re here to work with and to help raise the profile of these magical forests.

and are here to document the process and a film that is coming out maybe next year.

Over 300,000 animals are killed or displaced by native forest logging each year.

All living creatures, whether human or wildlife, have a fundamental right to exist and live their lives free from harm. The fact that hundreds of thousands of animals die or lose their habitat each year due to the forestry industry is a tragedy. This level of suffering is unnecessary, and it is one that we need to address urgently.

We need more compassionate and responsible stewardship of our native animals and the forests in which they inhabit. This means protecting our native forests.

Please write to the Tasmanian Premier and your local Tasmanian MP and tell them that there must be an immediate end to native forest logging in order to prevent the deaths of tens of thousands of native animals.

NOT THE TYPICAL TREE KIT. 800m of fishing line, Ronstan pulleys, screws, bolts & hose clamps. Also included is 1300m of dynaglide dynema throwline. Did someone say ultra light big tree camera rigs….

You know on average we’ve been able to undertake one tree Portrait project a year. We’ve just finished the edit of our latest tree, we set the lines for this tree in May 2024 👀, it was a battle.

Over then next 4 months we are going to photograph 4…. FOUR trees. Two on Vancouver Island, one in Tasmania and one on the mainland. All the bush work is going to be super siiick but Steve is going to be glued to the computer until April when he’s going back to Ghana for more climb training.

Yikes 😧

22/10/2024

Over 300,000 animals are killed or displaced by native forest logging each year. Hundreds of thousands of mammals, birds, lizards and frogs are unnecessarily killed or displaced each year. Wildlife is often directly killed by machinery, and the ones that do survive are faced with habitat loss. Other deaths are caused by the burning of logged areas, culling, or are killed by logging trucks driven at night.

Mature forests, particularly ones that contain hollow bearing trees, are extremely important for wildlife. Eucalypt trees can take hundreds of years to form hollows. Logging removes old hollow-bearing trees which many birds and mammals rely on for shelter and nesting.

Wildlife cannot survive without habitat. If we continue to log our native forests, the death toll of our native animals will continue to rise. The only way to stop this trend is to protect our forests immediately.

Please write to the Tasmanian Premier and your local Tasmanian MP and tell them that there must be an immediate end to native forest logging in order to prevent the deaths of tens of thousands of native animals.

Native forest logging has a massive impact on our wildlife, with over 300,000 animals are killed or displaced by native forest logging each year.

Mature forests are very important habitat for wildlife. They provide a variety of different environments for animals to live in, including tree hollows, big decaying logs and a diverse understory.

When mature forest is logged, the vast majority of these important habitat features are lost. Hollow bearing trees are often cut down, and understory trees and logs are destroyed. The forests that grow back are very simplified, and often contain only young trees of one or two species. It can take centuries for a logged forest to become mature enough to provide a wide range of homes for wildlife.

Please write to the Tasmanian Premier and your local Tasmanian MP and tell them that there must be an immediate end to native forest logging in order to prevent the deaths of tens of thousands of native animals.

Native forest logging kills and displaces 300,000 native animals each year. The main cause of wildlife deaths is due to habitat loss.

Wildlife is often killed directly by machinery. Animals do not simply move on, their instincts are to hide in their hollows or burrows when in danger. Those that do manage to get out of the path of logging machinery struggle to survive. Any habitat nearby will already be occupied by other
individuals of the same species and they have to compete for food and shelter.

All living creatures, whether human or wildlife, have a fundamental right to exist and live their lives free from harm. The fact that 300,000 animals die or lose their habitat each year due to the forestry industry is a tragedy. This level of suffering is unnecessary, and it is one that we need to address urgently.

Native forest logging is extremely detrimental to our native wildlife. Over 300,000 animals are killed or displaced each year.

Intact, or undisturbed forests, provide the best quality habitat for wildlife. Unlogged forests contain mature, hollow-bearing trees which provide safe nesting sites for many animal species. These intact ecosystems are also more resilient to drought, fire and insect attack, and are more likely to remain healthy in the face of climate impacts.

In order to protect our wildlife, we must protect our forests. We have a duty to protect and care for all of Tasmaniaʼs native animals. It is unacceptable that so many animals die or lose their habitat each year due to the forestry industry.

300,000 animals are killed by native forest logging each year. This includes mammals, birds, lizards and frogs. Wildlife is often directly killed by machinery. Their instincts are to hide in their hollows or burrows when danger approaches. The ones that do escape the path of bulldozers often have to compete for limited food or shelter and may not survive.

Animals can also be killed or displaced when logging coupes are burned. Possums and wallabies are often killed by shooters to prevent them from eating young seedlings. Many other animals are killed by logging trucks which are increasingly being driven at night.

Please write to the Tasmanian Premier and your local Tasmanian MP and tell them that there must be an immediate end to native forest logging in order to prevent the deaths of tens of thousands of native animals.

VOLUNTEER HABITAT INSTALLATIONS w & . Swift Parrots are all around our local community and look to be staying. A handful of flowering E. ovata 5 weeks ago has turned into dozens which look to be turning into the entire hillside.

Where we live many home owners have removed the large old hollow baring tress so while there is an abundance of food there’s a lack of habitat. So for a fun weekend project we decided to work with homeowners to install natural habitat logs and use the to speed up the natural processes of hollow formation… for free.

When it comes to this kind of work there’s a lot of very passionate opinions. Is it sugar glider proof, the hole is not the right size for a Swift Parrot! and so on. These very specific qualifiers often lead to decision paralysis and no work being done at all.

However, this habitat is suitable for a wide variety of native animals. It will, at the very least, lower the competition for the very few available habitat hollows. So sometimes when we get tunnel vision for one very specific issue we might not see the over all net positive of getting out and doing something rather than nothing.

HABITAT LOSS REMAINS THE BIGGEST THRET. Swift Parrots are challenging creatures to follow and photograph, each interaction last just seconds. However the very thing these, the fastest parrots in the world, rely on for nesting sites and food doesn’t move at all. Eucalyptus globulus, ovata & brookeriana are the very select few species of eucalyptus that they feed on.

However their biggest challenge is finding hollows to nest in. Generally there are very few old hollow baring trees that remain across their range. The competition for what hollows are there is fierce. Logging and land clearing is the number one reason for the swift parrots sharp decline in numbers.

urban tree removals is also a big factor, where we live there has been many removals of the largest hollow bearing trees. People need to be safe but IMHO most of these trees could have remained or been worked on to reduce the hazards if any.

OLD FRIENDS. Recently some friends from Taiwan and Oregon visited us to see some whoppers. No joke the weather has been very windy out bush the last 6 weeks so we were lucky to get one calm day while they were here to head into the canopy.

Over the summer we are going to g to be very busy so while the weather has kept us town bound we should appreciate it.

RUBICON 82.26m NSW’s TALLEST & BIGGEST TREE. Smashing the record by 11m! As soon as we saw this tree all 9 of us knew we had some work to do! This was an unbelievable mission into wild forests, we spent two very busy days documenting this patch.

We measured the height using laser and tape drop plus the volume for this tree via tape wraps. Well all knew it was going to be massive but smashing the height record, set just the weekend before, by 11m was just showing off.

We have uploaded a 15min process video to YouTube and we’ll upload a short here on insta tomorrow.

This project took a big team to find, plan, descend 300m off the plateau and hike equipment 6km into this patch.

CLASSIC 3 PERSON FLAKE You know how the week b4 last we measured NSWs tallest tree? How would you feel if we already demolished that record… by a lot, like heaps, not even a close contest anymore.

Big Spotty’s time on top was probably the shortest lived record tree title ever. Soz Biggie Spots, you’re still the prettiest tho.

Tape drop news drop Mundy 🤓

Here Tom Greenwood, and Jonas Bellchambers are so pumped on the mish that they all just have to do a one person job. (I’m just sour there was no flake train space left)
