RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF HUSKY

We have a great little flat in Huskisson which is there to be enjoyed, right in the heart, with balcony and a view of Jervis Bay (garage there too). There are 2 bedrooms each with their own Queen-sized bed. Location, location, location! Being just across from the Bay, means being just across from White Sands Park, Voyager Memorial Park, and Shark Net Beach, which for

those of you who are in the know, know this is right in Huskisson, which itself is right where the Currambene Creek enters the Bay. The site was where the Avoca Guest House stood, and it strikes me that there might have been the odd honeymoon there in the 1920s. The address of the flat is 10/72 Owen Street. The flat itself faces onto Hawke Street, and being one floor up has what I'm suggesting is a lovely expansive view over the White Sands Park and Jervis Bay. A stand of trees and its foliage is all that blocks the view of the distinctive Point Perpendicular of the North Head of Jervis Bay. Get out of the flat and walk along the shores of the Bay and discover the white sands of all the beaches. If Hyams Beach is supposed to have the whitest sand in the world, any beach of the Bay isn't that much different. Jervis Bay and St. Georges Basin are waterways close to each other and together represent wonderful locations for a whole range of water sports and activities. Directly from the flat you can cycle out.... the flatness of the area, and cycle tracks right at the Bay's edge, makes for great cycling for all comers (bike rental available at Jarvis Bay Bike Hire, 37 Owen Street). If you're a serious road cyclist I think you'd appreciate the quiet roads all tucked away from the highway thoroughfare, but the extensive cycle paths is great for everyone, but more especially social cyclers! Choose a picnic spot by cycling along the Bay. By all means look into what Huskisson has to offer. I'm about to pop down to Angels Cafe and take advantage of their breakfast deal to get my coffee. Huskisson's Main Street (Owen Street) is sun bathed all day and every day, and that's not lost on the shops there, at least for the shops on the south side. There is a large choice of cafes and eateries, and you can find the right place to sit, in or out of the sun. It strikes me there is always a light breeze around, which you expect next to the water, and also making for great relief from the heat on the really hot summer days. Really, the townships of Vincentia and Huskisson are a continuum of settlement at Jervis Bay, and while I think the centre of Huskisson is the place to be, and has the charm, together they contribute the services of the area. Vincentia has the Golf Course, for instance. For those wanting to discover the area and like the water and picnic spots, I've heard reasons to go to White Sands Beach, Wright's Beach, Blenheim Beach, Hyam's Beach, Currambene Creek, Sussex Inlet, Huskisson Beach, Collingwood Beach, Nelsons Beach, Chinaman's Beach, Greenfield Beach, Orions Beach, Callala Beach and Bay, M***a M***a Creek, Erowal Bay and Windermere Lake to name but a few places. Voyager Memorial Park has a fresh water swimming pool (you might have to pay to go in there). Of course, those looking to fish will know how to looks at the maps. The nearest surf beach is probably Caves Beach, but happy to get back to you on that. The waterways are complicated and I may be overlooking other surf beaches...they aren't the prominent feature of the area. Jarvis Bay "Kayak and Outdoor" is a couple of doors up in Hawke Street, where you can rent kayaks. I've mentioned the Cafes of Huskisson and specifically Angels Cafe, which is metres away from the flat, and you might hear some of their relaxing weekend afternoon music. The Huskisson Hotel is also across Owens Street (now "The Huskisson") also in a great location! There are extensive choices among the Restaurants and myself have already enjoyed the pizza at Faro Bianco, and the Indian fare at Taj Indian Restaurant. I'm eyeing off the Thai of Hawng Khrua which is the closest restaurant to the flat (ie I'm not counting Angels or the fare of the Huskisson Inn). A few metres further is the Huskie RSL, and closer to the mouth of Currambene Creek, but all the restaurants I speak of are within a couple of hundred metres. Wildginger is a great name for a restaurant, and I've put it on my list. Plenty of fish 'n' chips to be had. Just at the town limit is the museum, with the wonderfully "presented" Lady Denman ferry that was brought down from Sydney, and put inside in its entirety! This area is also very visitable, and there can be a small Saturday market there. Across the road again, or maybe a couple of blocks, and there is the monthly second Sunday of the month market on the sports ground (Bowling Club adjacent). Really the area is of the museum is another gem, has a lot more than just the museum and is another candidate for one more picnic. They actually have concerts inside the Lady Denman. A local and fresh produce market occurs in these grounds on the morning of the first Saturday of the month (I saw an ad that said "bop while you shop to the music of The Cosmic Dolphin Man and friends"). This is the home of the Jervis Bay Information Centre too. The link is below. A friend told me his father helped set up the museum, and I can't think of a better way to have used one's time. Everyone i meet seems to have a good story about Huskie. Really, most everything there is in the short blocks of Owen Street, but the museum is really more at one end, but also on Currambene Creek. OK, the bakery is tucked around the corner off Owen Street in Currambene Street, along with the Seagrass Brasserie. Did I mention the ice-cream shop? This is closer than the Thai Restaurant, and the triple choc chip ice-cream was last night's desert. The flat has all the amenities, as you'd expect. Actually, no dishwasher (not yet).. Stove, microwave, toaster, jug, etc. Garage. Small laundry (washer, tub, and dryer; small interior clothes line only). There is an ironing board and iron. There was a lovely cleansing light rain for a while this morning, and it reminded me the walk to the garage was all under cover. The day fined up and was close enough to perfect. We'll have soap and long life milk servings ready to allow you to make a cup of tea (we'll try and keep the tea up too)....for your arrival, and in the fridge, but otherwise you're on your own for supplies. I'm just about to walk over to the White Sands Park (ie cross the road). The first whale watching and dolphin watching cruises are due out soon. I've mentioned some possible activities, but today I think I might chill. A walk to the park was ambitious enough for today....

[There is also a two burner barbecue on the balcony, vacuum cleaner, mop and brooms]. Please note that the intercom system does not work.

Huskisson has two breweries. They are Flamin Galah Brewing Company and Jervis Bay Brewing Company. They are both in the Huskisson Industrial area, which is off the Woollamia Road, not very far from Huskisson. Consider walking, or cycling out there. (mostly 2 kms or less from Huskisson).

There are many offerings beyond the beer at both, including other alcoholic drinks. Both are great, so you can toddle off and do the comparisons yourself. In case food is your thing, Flamin’ Galah has “The Nest, Jervis Bay” food truck (approximately a theme of Burgers and Mexican - the Crispy Chicken Bao Bun is recommended), and Jervis Bay Brewing Company has “5 Little Pigs” in the truck there (5 Little Pigs well known yummie offerings in Huskie downtown). Note that these breweries are in the “open at midday, and trade only Wed to Sunday” world. I notice Flamin Galah now also exist on Broadway, Sydney (Darlington) too.

We’ve had some refurbishment if you’ve not looked in recent times, so the accommodation is a great place to be. Go through our posts, as most remain relevant at to what Huskisson and surrounds offer. This post is about the gem of a Shoalhaven rural location called “Bundanon”.

Have you had altogether too much fun right at Huskisson and Jervis Bay? We’ve made the suggestion to go to the Nowra Entertainment Centre before, but now Bundanon is back on line after rain caused problems for their roads. Don’t put in Bundanoon in your GPS. Bundanon is 42 kms from Huskie, but keep in mind the roads “slow down” significantly. The roads at the property are dirt roads. The area is known as Illaroo.

The property was given to the Australian Government by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd in 1993, but now there is also a modern gallery/museum, with some notable architecture there, open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. I’d suggest you’ll come across plenty of picnicking spots there. For the gallery adults entry cost is $18, but there are concessions and family discounts… by all means wait for an exhibition you’re interested in, but I just love a good picnic day.

Ramox Cafe is at the museum site and is a lovely and simple addition to the site, and open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. Maybe you don’t need the picnic, but when I say simple, Ramox cafe is not a hamburger joint…

Wait! The Arthur Boyd Homestead and Studio is open only Saturday and Sunday, but the location of more picnicking and walking locations. Keep it in mind too. When we arrived there was a wombat on one side of the road, and a wallaby on the other side. Not sure that’ll ever happen to me anywhere again. Not compulsory to go here, but glad I saw this for sure. The distance between the museum and the homestead and studio is 12 kms along the dirt road, though a little boat ride between the two would be perfect… they are closer going over the Shoalhaven River. Keep an eye out for the slit window in the studio, necessitated because of the need to remove the large “mock up” canvas of the bush of the area of Bundanon, and ultimately to “become” the huge 9.2 m x 19.9 m tapestry (thankyou to the wonderful weavers) in the Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra. The canvas Boyd had to get out of his small studio was nowhere as big as the Great Hall Tapestry!

Bundanon is a place for research, creativity and connection to living cultures.
