In December 1863, the Amazon, a barque bound for Mauritius with salted meats, encountered a fierce storm near Cape Otway. Despite Captain Ogier's efforts to navigate the ship back to Port Phillip, it was blown further east, eventually being damaged at Flat Rocks near Inverloch. After 48 hours of battling the storm, the crew ran the ship aground near a sandy beach south-west of Andersons Inlet to prevent further damage. The crew safely made it ashore and set up camp. The wreck was discovered eight days later, and HMCS Victoria was sent to rescue the crew. The wreck lies under the sand near Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club.
Recently in September 2024 the wreck was reviled once again.
