This is a Guinea Fowl.

The Guinea Fowl is a glorious bird. I love its exotic, strutting presence. It doesn't need a house because it roosts up in the trees. It shuns restraint. It has an enormous echoing call that some people don't like but that is because they are scumsuckers and smugglers. It eats ticks, spiders and snakes and calls out wildly to warn of impending danger.

Another thing that Guinea Fowl are good at is having babies. The babies are called keets when they are born and on Sunday, after having been missing for four weeks, our mother Guinea Fowl strolled into the yard with eleven keets. Very cute.

Lots of babies at the moment. These are Keets - baby Guinea Fowl - farmyard guardians. They make a huge and fabulous call, especially in the evenings when they are roosting. Seems to be a love them or hate them sort of a thing. We love them.

Breakfast-time for the new chooks

Four Indian Runner ducklings born on Sunday in the incubator about to join their six brothers and sisters already in the brooder.

This is a video I made for a young boy who visited Auntie Eileen's last weekend and who was sorry to be missing the arrival of a new batch of chooks yesterday. It was taken this morning as I let them out into their yard for the first time. It is always such a joyous moment even if it does tend to make for rather slow viewing. Compared to Mad Max for example.
